Song: Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Movie: Silsila (1981)
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar (monologues by Amitabh Bachchan)
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Music: Shiv-Hari (Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma & Hariprasad Chaurasia)

-AB--
Main aur meri tanhaai aksar yeh baatein karte hain
Tum hoti to kaisa hota, tum yeh kehti, tum voh kehti
Tum is baat pe hairaan hoti, tum us baat pe kitni hansti
Tum hoti to aisa hota, tum hoti to vaisa hota
Main aur meri tanhaai aksar yeh baatein karte hain

--Lata--
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte
Teri baahon mein hai jaanam
Mere jism-o-jaan pighalte
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte

--AB--
Yeh raat hai, yeh tumhaari zulfein khuli hui hai
Magar yeh dil hai ke keh raha hai
Ke tum yahin ho, yahin kahin ho

--Lata--
O tu badan hai main hoon chhaaya
Tu na ho to main kahan hoon
Mujhe pyaar karne waale
Tu jahan hai main vahan hoon
Hamein milna hi tha hamdam
Isi raah bhi nikal ke

O meri saans saans mahke
Koi bheena bheena chandan
Tera pyaar chaandni hai
Mera dil hai jaise aangan
Koi aur bhi mulaayam
Meri shaam dhalte dhalte

--AB--
Majboor yeh haalaat, idhar bhi hai udhar bhi
Tanhaai ki ek raat, idhar bhi hai udhar bhi
Kehne ko bahut kuch hai, magar kis se kahe hum
Kab tak yunhi khaamosh rahe aur sahe hum
Dil kehta hai duniya ki har ek rasm utha de
Deevaar jo hum dono mein hai, aaj gira de
Kyoon dil mein sulagte rahe, logon ko bata de
Haan humko mohabbat hai, mohabbat hai, mohabbat
Ab dil mein yehi baat, idhar bhi hai udhar bhi

--Lata--
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum
Yunhi saath saath chalte
Yeh kahan aa gaye hum

AB (monologue)
Me and my loneliness often talk about this
If you were there, how would it have been,
You would say this, you would say that,
You would be surprised at this,
You would giggle so much at that,
If you were present, it would be like this
If you were present, it would be like that
Me and my loneliness often talk about this.....

Lata (song)
Where have we come to
Walking side by side
My life and my heart melt, o darling,
In your loving arms

AB (monologue)
This is the night, your tresses have opened up
Is it the moonlight or your gazes
Which have set up my night?
Is this the moon or your bangle
Are these the stars or your shawl
Is this a whiff of the breeze or
The fragrance of your body?
Is this a rustle of leaves, or
Have you softly said something?
I've been thinking of this silently
That I even know you're not around,
You're not around anywhere
But this heart of mine insists on saying that
You're here, somewhere here

Lata (song)
You're the body, I'm the shadow,
Without you, where would I be?
O the one who loves me,
Wherever you are, I'm there
We had to meet, beloved,
Going by the same path

My breath smells of fresh sandalwood
You love is like the moonlight,
And my heart like a courtyard (that gets the moonlight)
I wish for something mellifluous
As my evening gets to set

AB (monologue)
A forced situation exists here, and there too,
The loneliness of one night is here as well, and there too
I've lots to say, but whom do I tell that?
How long should I be silent, how long should I suffer?
The heart tells me to denounce all customs of this world
To destroy the wall that's between us
To tell the people why the heart burns....
Yes, I'm in love, I'm in love,
The same reflects here, and there as well

Wah.. what a song and the baritone of AB is superb...

Just curious, why not laugh instead of giggle below..?

You would be surprised at this,
You would giggle so much at that,

Giggling is the girlish version of laughter often. So I opted for it.

music of two maestros !

I have never heard this song before. How romantic are those verses! Without the translation I don't think I would have enjoyed them as much at all.

Wasn't this the movie made to take advantage of the rumour surrounding Amitabh and Rekha?

Yes Susie, the movie was indeed based on the 'so-called' affair between AB & Rekha.

Thanks Suresh..

Excellent instrumental and choral arrangement, very romantic lyrics,
rare chemistry between the actors, excellent photography and very
unconventional structure of the song (not following typical pallavi..
stanzas.. pallavi) make this a unique song - even after a good 30
years..

Very sad that we didn't get much from this music duo..

Some of the scenes from this movie were shot in Switzerland. I remember a scene with a field of tulips..... very romantic! Yash Chopra was the director!

To put it simply, the theme was "A story of love lost and found, but twisted by society's demands and conventions to appear as adultery."

Yes. Keep up the good work Suresh. One of the best translations so far to do justice to the music that suits the emotions so well

At that time Amithab and Rekha are said to have been at the peak of their relationship.
Hence the chemistry.
Amith's soliloquies are beyond words
But I could never forgive jaya to have agreed to act as the third angle.
Why don't you post this as a comment in B's blog Suresh?
He'd be happy to read such a perfect translation
