Just like Yesudas-Prem Nazir, Mukesh-Raj Kapoor seemed made for each other.

How long must Raj have sat in that same position until they finished shooting the whole song!!! A great song. Until now I had gone along mostly with the pain in Mukesh's voice, but now I understand....

Raj Kapoor had two preferences (apart from Nargis): Mukesh & Shankar Jaikishan. (another actor who liked to work with Mukesh was Manoj Kumar; but look at the movie 'Do Badan' where Manoj was paired opposite Asha Parekh - music was by Ravi and there was no Mukesh when it came to the tracks)

Then there were the hit pairs of Shammi Kapoor - Mohd. Rafi, Rajesh Khanna - Kishore Kumar.

Ravi had a great affinity for Mahendra Kapoor. At this juncture, I remember a superb song written by Sahir Ludhianvi, "Chalo ik baar phir se ajnabi ban jaaye hum dono". (Come on, let's be strangers once again)

Chalo Ek Baar Phir Se is definitely one of the top on my list of Hndi songs.

Yes, from a Hindi movie... now the Hindi that was used in the movies especially in the 60s was actually a convenient mixture of Hindi and Urdu.

Talking about Mukesh, correct me if I'm wrong. I read somewhere on the net that it took a long time for him to learn a song and he used to go offkey very often during the recordings.  Is it true?

Sunny, I don't know about that. Lots of gossips float about. Don't know what to believe and what to scrap.

Even I've been heavily influenced. When I talk about reality, the word that immediately comes to my mind is 'haqeeqat' which is Urdu.

For a gathering or audience, you say 'sabha' in Hindi, but 'mehfil' in Urdu. The latter sounds much more sweeter to the ears.

I've personally felt that  there were lots of imperfections in his voice.
In fact,I am not sure on what scale an expert musician would rate Mukesh.
But he had a distinct voice with melancholy as soul.
I guess that's what appeals him to generations of music lovers
