Rahat is helping on a continuing basis about seven hundred students, enabling them to take care of themselves and to live a life of Dignity and Self Respect. These are the role models who have shown that a better world is possible. These are the shining stars who have enriched our efforts and have given an abiding meaning to our work. And we say this with great responsibility: only Rahat would have picked up these Rahat children, majority of whom are orphans, whose stories we have narrated below. There are of course hundreds of stories, but we can share only a few of these.
Madanpura, North Mumbai. This widow comes from South Mumbai. Her husband died due to Aids. She herself is suffering from full-blown HIV+ …. Her daughter, Iram, has passed her SSC exams and will shortly be going to college this year. Rahat has been tracking this family for the past ten years. In another case this lady came from Borivali, North Mumbai…she has two daughters, both are in college. A son is in school. Their father died due to Aids some years back.. We have no idea how this family manages or survives. And finally on the 22nd of June we met Mehak who is in standard 8th… She came with her naani.. goes to a good school. Her mother is a HIV+ patient. The father died due to Aids. Extremely difficult to come face-to-face with such cases.
Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. India. Many years back a man called Hasan found us. Hasan and his family were in Mumbai for Hasan’s treatment for blood cancer at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. As some things are destined to happen, Hasan died. Rahat has been following the family from 2001. His two daughters are now going to college in Gwalior, with Rahat facilitating their education.
Khajoor ki Galli, Lucknow. Central to Rahat’s objective is to help orphans get educated and become self reliant… Rahat has been helping one such family who were once in Mumbai and now stay in Lucknow… Rahat has been tracking this family from 2005. Nasreen has three children, Arbaaz Std 9, Aliya & Aafiya Std 6. We wish them all the best. We hope to see these children going to college. Inshallah.
Behrampada, Bandra East. Lets call the boy Azan… we picked him from this infamous Behrampada slum and got him enrolled to an English Medium Boarding School in a sea-facing town on the Western line in Maharashtra. (Azan’s two brothers dropped out of school. His widowed mother got remarried……). Azan is pretty much on his own. In March 2015 Azan will appear for his SSC exams. We will keep you posted on his growth and development. His annual fees are about Rs 40000/-. This will be a classic case of the efficacy of nurturing someone out of his natural environment, which in Azan’s case is the sub-human slum of Behrampada. Farzana is also from Behrampada, This young woman who is a teacher has been taking care of her family for the past fifteen years. She has been battling an energy-sapping disease…and has periodic relapses. Rahat has been mentoring this family for over a decade. Farzana is also a Rahat volunteer. Well done!!!
ZAKAT COLLECTION. Rahat activities are funded mainly through the Zakat collection in Ramzan every year. And Rahat does need funds on a consistent and larger level if it is to help more children like Azan, Farzana and…. The list is endless. We therefore request you to send Rahat a part of your Zakat this Ramzan. (Donations are also welcome). No amount is too small not to be of help. Please ask at least two other persons to do the same. Zakat/Donations may be sent by a Cheque/or Draft in favor of Rahat Welfare Trust to our Administrative Office address at: Row House 5 A, Asmita Hill View CHS Ltd, Shrikanth Dhadway Marg, VIP Area, Mira Road East 401107. Maharashtra. INDIA. Donations of Zakat to Rahat are entitled to Exemptions under Section 80 G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Donors in Mumbai may contact us on 9022411786 or 9892309785, we will collect the Zakat from their home, office or shop. We thank our donors who are generous kind and compassionate. Thank You.
