During electric discharge machining where the arc strikes the
wotkpiece that under goes melting and vapourisation. The material
adjacent to that only undergoes melting and resolidification after the
arc extinguishes. This small thickness layer is called white layer
which is very hard and brittle due to rapid chilling.
