Howdy friends,

To all the students who are attempting to write record. the format of the record should be as follows. Also below the format i have given a sample experiment I wrote in the record.

Some tips:

As time is a constraint, I generated soft copies of tables and graphs using excel and printed them and pasted on the record (which is perfectly acceptable)

its easy if you work in groups. divide the number of experiments among your group and each generate graphs in soft copies, print and paste as i did

Hope I helped

Regards

Rosh

Study Skill Inventory

Experiment No     : 01                                                                                          Experimenter      : Roshana S

Date                        : 24 Mar 2009                                                                        Subject                 : R Chandra

INTRODUCTION:

Study skills are the various strategies that could be developed and used to improve a student’s knowledge base, by gaining in-depth understanding of the lessons and the ability to perform well in the exams. Though these skills depend on various factors, they can be improved by providing suitable training and support.

AIM:

The aim of this experiment is to assess the study skill of the individual using ‘Study skills Questionnaire’ by M Kanchana (1986).

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

1.        Study skills Questionnaire by M Kanchana (1986).

2.        Answer Sheet

3.        Manual and Scoring Key

DESCRIPTION OF MATERIAL:

The questionnaire has a total of 52 items on various aspects of study skills. It measures one’s organization of time, goal setting, ability to concentrate, learning methods and obstacles for effective studying. This has been formulated in both English and Tamil. Reliability and validity have been established. The Test-Retest reliability on a sample of 150 high-school students drawn from a corporation high scool in Chennai was found to be 0.86. The response is in Yes or No format. This questionnaire can be administered in individual setting or group setting.

PROCEDURE:

Ÿ         The environment should be adjusted to provide a comfortable test setting.

Ÿ         To increase the validity of the responses the experimenter should establish a good rapport with the subject, by assuring that the responses will be kept strictly confidential and that they will be used only for experimental purposes.

Ÿ         The demographic details of the subject should be collected in the appropriate place.

Ÿ         The study skills questionnaire should be given to the subject along with the answer sheet

Ÿ         The Subject should be clearly instructed on how the questionnaire should be answered, with a stress on honesty and sincerity in providing the responses.

Ÿ         If the subject has any doubt in the questionnaire, it should be clarified then and there and as applicable.

SCORING:

The scoring was done as per the instructions in the manual.

RESULTS:

Table 1: Shows the individual data of subject [RC], measured using the “Study skills Questionnaire” by M Kanchana (1986).

Table 2: Shows the group data in using the “Study skills Questionnaire” by M Kanchana (1986).

DISCUSSION

Individual Data:

On analysis of the individual data of the subject [RC], from Table 1, it is observed that the subject has scored 38.

Score and interpretation:

The norms set for the study skill inventory is

Above 30               - Above average

30                            - Average

Below 30                - Below average

Higher the score , Higher is the study skill.

The maximum score that can be obtained in this questionnaire is 52.

Characteristics:

The subject has scored 38, which falls in the above average category.

Factors:

The subject has got this score may be due to various factors.

The subject aged 27, is young and hence may tend to have good memory skills

The subject may also have a conducive environment at home.

The subject is a home maker and hence may have enough leisure time for developing study skills.

Group Comparison:

Comparing the subject’s score against that of the group, the predominant characteristic of the          subject falls exactly at the Women average score, and slightly above the group’s average score.

Group data:

On analysis of group data from Table 2,

Subject VN has got the highest score.

Subject SN* has got lowest score.

The overall range of the group score is between 25 and 46

The average score of the group is 35.7

5 subjects are above the average and 5 subjects are below the average score

In the group the men’s average score is 33.4 which is slightly lower than the women’s average score being 38.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

The experiment on study skills may be useful in educational and vocational selection, planning and training. When a student is not performing up to his/her potential, it could be due to several reasons: examination fear/ test anxiety, poor study skills, family problems, lack of goal in life, below average intellectual potential, learning disability or any physical impairment such as vision/hearing. Hence poor study skills form only one part of the whole gamut of factors that could be responsible for lower academic performance.

In guidance and counseling, this can be used, besides obtaining other background information of the student, to determine which students have below average study skills. Accordingly group study programs could be designed for those students who need additional guidance.

CONCLUSION:

Ÿ         The subject RC has above average study skills with a score of 38, which is above average.

Ÿ         The men in the group have an average score of 33.4, which is above average.

Ÿ         The women in the group has an average score of 38, which is above average

Ÿ         The entire group has an average score of 35.7, which is above average

Ÿ         No two individuals have obtained the same score. Hence they tend to differ in their study skills
