Over the past several years, students and faculty alike have become increasingly cynical of our student government at UWM, also known as the Student Association. After the controversial elections last year, few people still have faith in the governing body of our university. The vast majority of the decisions made by the UWM Student Association deal directly with the allocation of over TEN MILLION DOLLARS of student money, yet very little is done to inform students that such a body exists, and those who are aware of its existence have little to no faith in the SA’s ability to represent their best wishes.
What we at UWM, need now more than ever, is a real change in the Student Association. The isolation of this governing body is a fundamental problem which prohibits student involvement and awareness of its actions. Currently , the governing body at UWM is made up of small group of allies who make decisions and implement policies designed to further their own specific agenda, rather than representing the needs of the thousands and thousands of students who’s money their toying with.
Change at UWM is not only necessary, but it’s possible. Students need urgent action to stop the corruption, manipulation, intimidation, and the exclusivity that has plagued our University for years. The power must belong to the many students who pay a great deal to attend this school, not to the few who decide to ignore their needs. In this coming election; students need to use their power to elect a new government for our University.
To enact real change at UWM, it will take a coalition of student organizations like yours to build the force necessary to inform the student body. Will you stand with us, Jay Burseth and Mike Zahorik, and support our candidacy and pursuit of transparency and fairness within all levels of the Student Association.
Sincerely,
