The Aqueous Geochemistry and Mineralogy group at Washington University
in St. Louis invites applications for a postdoctoral scientist position
in environmental geochemistry and mineralogy. The primary focus of the
position will be to the effect of phosphate on uranium adsorption,
nucleation, and precipitation in subsurface sediments. This project
will combine wet chemical studies with advanced spectroscopic,
microscopic, and diffraction characterization methods to identify the
chemical processes that affect uranium fate in the environment in the
presence of phosphate. This project will involve collaborations with
colleagues at both Washington University and Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory. Travel to synchrotron light sources and other user
facilities is required. Opportunities exist for the postdoctoral
scientist to also participate in other existing and future projects in
the group. Extensive experience in at least one of the following areas
is desired: laboratory-based wet chemistry methods, XAFS spectroscopy,
or advanced electron microscopy methods (e.g., TEM). The initial
appointment will be for one year with a possible extension contingent on
the availability of funds.
Applicants should send a current curriculum vitae, including publication
list, statement of research interests, and the names and contact
information for three references to Prof. Jeffrey Catalano
(
cata...@eps.wustl.edu). A Ph.D. in a related field is required at the
time of appointment. The position will be available starting January 1,
2014, although later dates of appointment can be negotiated; the
position will remain open until filled. This project is funded through
the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Biological and Environmental
Research, Subsurface Biogeochemistry Research Program. Women and
minorities are encouraged to apply. Washington University is an equal
opportunity/affirmative action employer.
