PhD Position in Petrology at the ETH Zurich

We are pleased to advertise a PhD project described below. The project is fully funded within the European Research Council grant “Interplay between metamorphism and deformation in the Earth’s lithosphere”. Further enquiries about the position as well as applications should be addressed directly to Lucie Tajcmanova (luc...@gmail.com).

The application should contain a cover letter with your motivation and CV (containing a complete overview of education, supervised professional training and professional work) + publications (if applicable).

Qualified individuals need to have a MSc-degree in Geosciences at the time of appointment. The appointment will be for a period of 3-4 years and is available from November 2013. The advertisement remains open until the position is filled.

The successful candidate will undertake a mostly modelling-based study within my ERC project focused on understanding the interplay between chemical and mechanical processes in metamorphic rocks. The work will comprise: (1) A careful description of selected microstructures using conventional analytical methods. (2) Theoretical formulations that account for pressure variations. (3) Thermodynamic modelling and numerical simulations. The goal will be to investigate whether mechanics can be responsible for the enigmatic zonation preserved in garnets. Through numerical simulations the effect of pressure on the observations will be described. Furthermore, criteria whether the garnet zoning was controlled mechanically or solely through diffusion will be established. The aim of the research is to bring a tool which will allow for physically rigorous and geologically realistic interpretations of our petrographic observations.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate preferably with experience or interests in petrology and/or deformation processes. Preference will be given to a candidate with documented previous experience in thermodynamic and/or numerical modelling or to a candidate who shows his/her motivation to learn it. Good knowledge of math, physics and chemistry is advantage.

As a PhD candidate you will be working with a dynamic and very friendly team of world-class researchers at the ETH Zurich on the new project funded by the European Research Council as well as will work in close collaboration with University Lausanne and University Melbourne.
