Alberto Saal and I cordially invite contributions to the following session at the upcoming Goldschmidt meeting, June 22-28, 2014 in Sacramento, California.

Session 02g: Lunar Minerals, a Window into the Origin and Evolution of the Moon

Lunar minerals are tiny samples of the Moon carrying an information load that is disproportionate to their sizes. From the study of minerals it is possible to determine the major, trace and volatile element composition of lunar magmas and their sources, the pressure, temperature, fO2, as well as cooling rates, extent of degassing and rheological conditions that acted during the magmatic and metamorphic events that controlled the internal differentiation and the surface evolution of the Moon; not only that, lunar minerals also supply the time when these events took place!  Furthermore, minerals provide the time that lunar rocks and regolith have been exposed to Galactic and Solar Cosmic Rays and indirectly give the isotopic composition of ions from the solar wind (and other sources) implanted onto the surface of the Moon. We request contributions dealing with observational, modeling and experimental work on geochemical, geochronlogical, petrological and remote sensing studies of lunar minerals that would help us understand the evolution of the Moon's interior and surface.
