We can write it in pencil. I have done it in the past. CGA has no issues at all.

I've used erasable pens in past exams. They do not flow quite as nice as regular pens but good enough.

I don't think you can use pencils actually.

It states on the National Exam FAQ, that only pencil is allowed for the multiple question scantron. All other questions must be done in pen. Also indicates that papermate or other pen eraser is not allowed. You are to cross out incorrect answers. Ensure you double space to add information or fixing your answers. They have a dos and don't online.

Very helpful read through and covers any other questions. Good Luck everyone. Remember that there is usually no wrong answers as long as you can back up your reason.

Pencils tend to fade and if it is difficult to read the marker will not be happy and you are more likely to lose marks because of it. Double space, neat and easy to read, be get start to the point. Annette

They clearly state at the beginning of the exam you can only use pen on the write and pencil for notes is permitted on the left.  I had an exam marked zero and had to retake the course because I used pencil on the entire exam.

Really!! Until PA1 and PA2 all my 3 years I have used pencil in all exams and passed. I don't understand why they would give you zero. As long as they can read what is the problem ?? With pencil you can erase easier .. Well until I found the erasable pen, I never used pen..

I did too but I must have just gotten a bad marker that one time.  They tell you you cannot right at the beginning when they read the directions.

I would agree with Donna that you never know how snobby your instructor is. I'm not taking any chances and writting with a pen. There are specific exam instruction on the cga website when to use pen and pencil.
For students in Ontario please see the link:

  • Descriptive, i.e., subjective and essay exam portions, must be written in ink. Calculations, journal entries, rough work and work sheets may be submitted in either pen or pencil.

Good luck to everyone on the exam.
