smlm, UM did offer me jawatan RA.......for a semester - preparation for PhD proposal, and aftr that i can apply for UM scholarship(SLAI is it?).....to further Phd, is it the same condition w u salma? poning kapla.....i remember in one of ur emails, salma, u mentioned, u amik je RA post to samb PhD cepat is it??
i havent really thought of the title/ specialisation for phd thesis, dun think i want to further phd dlm masa terdekat.....HELP!.......on the other hand, im thinking WHY NOT?
but my preference is jadi lecturer dulu, simultaneously, bole prepare for professional architect exam......cuz lecturer with Ar. dpt post 48.............then PhD later........completing PhD, u dpt post 52 rite.

allow me to share some of my 'basic' knowledge in lecturing and kindly correct me if i'm wrong..
IMHO, nk jadi lecturer UM, konfem kena amik PhD,.. nak sambung PhD n dapat scholar UM dgn senang, i suggest masuk through RA or Tutor etc n apply for SLAI (bukan Sly!! :P )... ko dah ada Master ke? kalo takde, try cari tajuk thesis yg power n convert to PhD straight away... pasal tajuk thesis, i think u have to be RA first, and discuss later with your supervisor bout the title
i just wonder how are u going to get PhD n Ar. simultaneously especially if u happen to further study abroad..? tp Ar. kacang je kot... 1 tahun dah boleh setel kan? hehe :P apam dah register?

regarding to the subject, actually if u r not a tutor or RA @UM, still can apply for the SLAI..just if u dpt u akn berkhidmat for UM la after finishing ur phd. SLAI is open for phd programme only so kena ade mer lah...
so if emma nk apply, kena la cepat2 skit bcoz offer akn valid if u dpt until at least u start ur phd by dec rite.so nk kena cari supervisor and buat research proposal lagi...till then...gud luck!

SEBENARNYE BILA PIKIR balik gaji RA not bad, die ofer rm1800......plus flexible hours is it? my main concern is that, i havent set my mind to do PhD dlm masa terdekat, lagilah, cari supervisor yg ade chemistry (in other uni selain UiTM cuz diploma till master dh wat kt uiTM) plus tajuk thesis in one semester........setting our mind n our heart to do sumthing is important kalu tak, tak menjadi nanti lagi naya......

Dear Emma,
Salam. Saje menambah apa y kawan-kawan dah cakap..Sy rasa ada tesilap skit tang RA tu.
I was a GRA (graduate research assistant) masa my 2 years of Masters. GRA ni technically is still a student -postgraduate-memandangkan gaji dia dapat bersih tak tolak apaapa. Emma ditawarkan GRA/RA? Kalau RA gajinya tak silap sy kena tolak-tolak la sbb dia cam kerja dalam jawatan. Jarang sy dengar RA ni buat Masters/Ph.D dalam masa yg sama, selalunya dia kena keje dulu kalau tak silap saya. Tentang tempoh, tak berapa sure.
Kalau Emma masuk as a lecturer, Emma kena berkhidmat at least 3 tahun sblm dihantar cuti belajar utk Ph.D (confirm dalam jawatan). dulu punya sistem mcm ni, sy rasa still takde perubahan. Sy dulu masuk UKM as a tutor dgn Masters, kemudian naik lecturer bbrp bulan lpstu sekejap (sbb tutor takde lesen ngajar, derang suh ngajar), tapi sbb derang suh sambung Ph.D cepat, saya turun balik jd tutor sbb baru je bbrp bulan masuk UKM, dia cam tak aci la kalau pi dah jd lecturer. Hal ni mungkin berbeza dgn universiti2 baru yg dulu kolej universiti sbb kat situ mmg senang sket jd lecturer. UITM pun senang sket rsnya, dulu mula2 ditawar DS45 - so dia berbeza ikut universiti. Sy rasa UM lbeh kurang cm UKM.
Tp bila abes cuti belajar dgn Ph.D, skrg lecturer muda (tak berapa nk muda dah hehe) akan ditawar terus dgn Gred 51, Insya Allah. Ke 52? Rasa cm 51. Tak reti bab gred2 ni. Tu yg dijanjikan kalau takde perubahan. Wallahu'a'lam

The dean asked " r u ok if we offer u RAship (telinga kurang dengar...is it RA scholarship, ada ke?) for one semester to prepare for PhD proposal, we give u rm1800 and aftr that u can apply for scholarship" bunyi mcm gitu laaa..
i think i didnt directly decline but i said "actually my personal planning is to sit for professional exam within 3 yrs and doing PhD within 5 yrs(maksudnye aftr 5 yrs actualy..hehe..cuz earlier i said ive studied in UiTM from diploma till masters, so now i want to get to know ppl in UM, to get used to its environment cuz im planning to further my PhD in other uni besides UiTM )"
then the dean said, "its good that we know ur personal planning" jotting down sumthing......gosh.....tak tau le.....i applied for lecturer post.....

Taktau kalau2 berbeza ikut skim, tapi skim SLAI/SLAB ni lebih kurang. Tempoh maksimum dalam kontrak, kalau tak silap, 5 tahun. Paling cepat/tak, bergantung pada universiti kat mane kita sambung. Bergantung dgn supervisor jugak. Rasanya kat sini sekarang mana-mana pun minimum 3 tahun, tapi lazimnya 3 tahun setengah bila campur thesis submission + viva. Ada jugak minimum 4 tahun cam di Netherlands, rasanya Canada pun sama. External factors byk, e.g. siapa external examiner thesis kita, kalau dia cepat semak, cepatlah viva. Bagi yang start study dengan masters dan convert ke Ph.D, selalunya dia boleh habis cepat sikit sbb dia cam sambung je kerja-kerja master dia, selalunya org camni yg boleh abis dalam masa 3 tahun.
It is not compulsory to further oversea, bergantung kpd polisi universiti. Kalau Masters, dia tak kisah kalau nk buat kat dalam. Cam UKM 'musti' ke luar, kecuali keadaan2 spesel di mana dah penah buat masters/bachelor kat luar ke...atau ada penyakit tertentu ke yg menghalang ke luar..semua ni kena dimaklumkan dgn rasmi dan disahkan. Keputusan bergantung kpd budi bicara pihak universiti.

Sal rs macam UM tawarkan RAship tu dulu because they want you badly. cam cara nk positively ikat Emma la kot. yg Sal nmpk most probably derang akan serapkan Emma sebagai tenaga pengajar, thus you'll be an RA sementara 6 bulan tu je and then mungkin drg bagi jawatan felo/tutor. Jwatan ni sementara, bukan tetap. RA satu semester tu mungkin macam persediaan Emma utk sambung belajar dari segi scholarship application, carik universiti, cari supervisor. Dari segi kerja-kerja RA, RA ni bukan GRA mahupun tutor. RA tu akan terlibat dalam kerja-kerja penyelidikan scr langsung, tak terlibat dalam pengajaran. Bila dah jadi felo/tutor baru Emma boleh assist lecturer mengajar, selalunya handle tutorial/practical. Tapi rsnya tu tak lama sbb intention derang mcm Emma kena sambung a.s.a.p?
Tapi tanya la derang betul-betul. What will happen after 6 months, whether u'll be given a felo / tutor status, kena further asap ke ape. Sal rasa nampak gayanya macam Emma kena further cepat? Wallahu'A'lam.

entah la Sal.....maybe they want me, but they cant resist my competitors - 2 senior lecturers (older than me, already doin part time w UM, one malay, one chinese....the malay one was x-UM and she's goin to sit for professional exam -to get Ar.-nx yr since she has already submitted her log book - compilation of architectural works, she's 31 yrs)...thats maybe why they just tanya wht if they ofer me RAship...in order for me to further my PhD...sedeynye.....just let it be.......

U force dia to further study.. tp rasa nya U nk hantar dia gi abroad kot.. tgh pikir camne nk pilih the best way what to do for both our carrier... normally husband quit kerja atau cuti tanpa gaji n teman wife gi oversea.. hehehehe... skrg ni, kena plak dah ada anak.. have to think deeply... tp kalo husband pindah sana, jadi cleaner tukang sapu la jawap nya... hehe :P

biasa husband akan jadi maintenance engineer la
ada juga husband yang kerja setaraf dengan kerja dia kat Msia
ada husband lecturer UKM..wife dia buat PhD kat sydney, dia plak kerja major hazard facilitator (lebih kurang Safety and Health mgr kat msia)
so kena pandai2lah pilih kerja kat oversea..supaya bila balik msia nanti, at least dpt pengalaman berguna kat oversea
ada satu lg kes
kawan aku buat master 1 yr same uni dgn aku
USM force suruh dia dtg sydney
dia dtg sorang, husband dia x ikut.., x kan nak quit job nak ikut dia dtg sydney
lgpun dah senior engineer..balik belum tentu dapat balik kerja mcm tu

my wife sendiri skrg student phD kt Uni of Auckland, NZ.
time berangkat ke sana our daughter was just around 7months old...but luckily we were able to bring my mother in law. so dia tolong jaga my daughter la until my wife settle down (dekat setahun gakla..huhu).
Since i have my own career and some other commitment (rumah juta2 rupiah tu sapa nak bayar pak?hehe) thus I can't afford to quit my job and move there...lagipun tgk industry gakla. Alhamdulillah rezeki Allah nak bagi i got pretty good offer with rotational package where i can work 1 month on-off basis with free airfare tickets every month to/from Auckland..
Kalau di Auckland mmg ramai la kes hubby follow wifey sambung phD. few manage to get a decent job as engineer, accountants etc...some spouses even decided to further the study themselves.
so poknik asal niat tu for family insyAllah Dia bantu..:)

Apa kata Poknik try cari kerja dulu siap2 kat targeted country. Buat a compilation of your skills and expertise, dan hantar kpd company2 yg berkaitan. Ramai jugak seniors yg spouse nye kerja kat Eire/UK, bertambah luas pengalaman dan kepakaran derang. Rezki di mana-mana bumi tuhan ada, Insya Allah. Kalau Poknik sambung belajar pun ok, cuba cari tempat di mana-mana universiti IPT/IPTS, dan dalam interbiu beritahu perihal wife yg akan sambung belajar - jadi kat situ selalunya dipermudahkan sebab government dapat berjimat dalam banyak hal. Boleh jugak apply masa wife poknik dah start belajar di oversea (poknik ikut sekali siap2), so derang tau the condition will be much more easier sebab both husband and wife sedang melanjutkan pengajian. Jimat lagi. Option terakhir, kot kalau jd tukang sapu pun, still Poknik dpt additional fund dari IPT tempat wife kerje..a spouse allowance of RM..hm tak ingat. Baby pun dapat allowance jugak. Banyak! Insya Allah tak rugi kalau wife sambung belajar di luar negara. Nanti Affan pun speaking omputih berhabuk sbb dari kecik dengar news dalam English. Kot kalau Affan dapat adik kat sini, for instance lahir kat Ireland ke, dapat dia taraf kerakyatan sini. Sok-sok dia nk sambung belajar di Europe pun banyak benefit..

thanks habil, sal n nurul... u guyz help me a lot.. actually the
biggest problem for me is to leave my company... my boss sure feels
very sad coz he's anticipating me to finish my Sr. professional exam
(Similar to Ir) and help him run his business.. in fact, thats my only
dream in my career level.. another word is, I love my job! if i come
back to M'sia after another 3 years, i'm left far behind others who
already gain working experience, contacts, public relations etc.. and
i come back with 'cleaning n sweeping' experties.. hehe Aduhh kepala
pusing..
anyway lepas baca email korang, i've found the only job that suits me,
which is what Habil is doing now ; Offshore! i believe with that job,
i can afford to support my family in pound-currency-country and get
chance to grow my lil' son together with my wifey.. even i have to
spend months on open sea.. at least thats better than staying apart
from my family for years!... psstt, habil xde keje kosong ke? heheheeh

this morning sempat baca emel nurul, she said scholarship slab/slai doesnt mean we attach with that particular Uni if jawatan cuma RA/fellow, is it? so if i nk attach ngn UM, i have to make sure jawatan i tutor aftr 6 months of being an RA..meaning masa dpt scholarship for SLAI, my post is tutor, sama ngan salma's condition, correct?
so, starla stussy, if u tanak attach ngn any particular Uni, jst make sure ur post is fellow masa dpt scholarship, is it (nurul or salma?)
I applied for Lecturer post, tapi ada 2 org senior lecturers yg mmg dh buat part time kt UM yg di'interview'.......
like salma said, hehehhe, maybe they like me, n they want me to be part of UM, hehehhe (my assumption) so the dean asked i ok tak if they give me RAship for 6 months -preparing for PhD proposal, n after that, i applied for SLAI scholarship....(for ur info, i had experience teaching at Limkokwing for 3 semesters before joining JKR, before that, i was with a private architectural firm)
its just that, i think, my competitor, the malay lady, she's 31 yrs, of course, she has greater experience both in architectural practice n academic......
ps: of course la English kene ok, u have to appaer very confidence, but not arrogant yet down-to-earth....
hehehhehe....antara kriteria-kriterianye...sekadar menjawab pertanyaan starla....

at this point of my life,
i dun think it's rational for me to accept RAship, very risky, jawatan sementara, furthermore, it's not in my original plan...
i believe in life, we have to move forward and be better than we are before cuz Allah telah menciptakan manusia dlm bentuk yang sempurna.. u can move backward, only if it creates a platform to jump forward....
what im saying, we dun compare our achievement with other ppl, but we compare with our previous achievements....so that we know how n what to focus.....so that, we are still walking (or running) on a straight line (jalan yg lurus) meant for us....
so, i think, Mr. Dean, take me (as a lecturer) or just leave me......sedeynye......just let it be.

if im not mistaken,many IPTA have offered fellowship to students
many UM scholarship here..they are doing Phd here, some are lectures, some under SLAI etc
FYI, i have friend..previously she worked as a RA in UM
later on..further master in UM under SLAB scheme
like i said b4. IPTA nak kurangkan budget nak kena bayar tu their staff
kalo post tetap, like lecturer or tutor byk elaun nak kena cover
if fellow SLAB/SLAI..univ hanya cover utk elaun peribadi msia je
and i ada family..ada la elaun bantuan family and kids..but not too much like permanent post
i think SLAI/SLAB is same with fellow..at the end they will be atatched with the
yg penting emma kena tanya UM betul2..ur post mcm mana
if u nak kerja UM after this..make sure yg emma under SLAB UM
like me i under SLAB USM..sponsored by KPT and USM
while salma under KPT UKM
elaun kami di overseas di bayar oleh KPT dan elaun di msia dibayar oleh IPTA masing
if emma dah decide nak join UM as a RA at the beginning
later on buat proposal then apply for scholarship KPT under SLAB/SLAI UM
salary x lah sebanyak post yang emma kerja sekarang
for me..b4 this i kerja temporary RA in USM
then apply RLKA USM
so yg ni lagi better dari post yg lama
harap dpt membantu

Good luck.. cuma perlu paham betul2 dgn polisi KPT tentang biasiswa
utk sambung PHD... perlu tgk bonding dgn KPT n Univ dan berapo tahun
valid sponsorship. Ade gak pensyarah UKM yg di berhentikan sebb x abis
PHD dan juga gagal phd.. kalau gagal kene byr balik mengikut
perjanjian.. make sure everything is in order.

keje pensyarah tak semudah yg disangka.. perlu byk buat penyelidikan..
tulis journal etc. kalau univ mcm ukm yg ade ISO lagi la bz dgn sistem

aku senang je skit cikgu2 ni..sebab kalo korang sambung masters bidang korang..macam aku ni..pendidikan teknikal..korang akan diserap terus ke maktab perguruan..ops silap..institut perguruan dengan gred gaji DG44....kemudian dalam korang duduk kat 44 tuh korang apply la PhD..tapi biasa gomen..kena ikut queue..senioriti dan sebagainya kan...pening kan..tapi kalau korang perform ke apa ke..kipas termasuklah tu...applylah PhD..kompen dapat pastu siap terus dapat DG52..jadi pengarah beb..hahahah..silap2 JUSA C...ada drebar lagi..hahaha..muhahahhaa...tapi lambatlah skiet..sebab nak cari pangkat senioriti tuh...tak macam korang laa..ini pendapat aku dalam bidang pendidikan..bukan pendidikan tinggi tau..pendidikan sekolah...hehehe...

this morning sempat baca emel nurul, she said scholarship slab/slai doesnt mean we attach with that particular Uni if jawatan cuma RA/fellow, is it? so if i nk attach ngn UM, i have to make sure jawatan i tutor aftr 6 months of being an RA..meaning masa dpt scholarship for SLAI, my post is tutor, sama ngan salma's condition, correct?

I applied for Lecturer post, tapi ada 2 org senior lecturers yg mmg dh buat part time kt UM yg di'interview'.......

its just that, i think, my competitor, the malay lady, she's 31 yrs, of course, she has greater experience both in architectural practice n academic......
ps: of course la English kene ok, u have to appaer very confidence, but not arrogant yet down-to-earth....

its just that, i think, my competitor, the malay lady, she's 31 yrs, of course, she has greater experience both in architectural practice n academic......
