Here’s what I've come up with. You will need roughly 31' of 3/4" maple dowel. You can either use 4' lengths or 6' lengths.
3/4" maple dowel 4' $ 4.89 EA
3/4" maple dowel 6' $ 7.89 EA
Now, as for the wider material. You can either use Baltic Brich, which is a furniture grade or veneer core and/or particle core birch. Unfortunately you cannot get any plywood in this thickness. You can get pine lumber but once again, not as strong. Here are the costs;
5x5x 1/4" baltic birch $ 23.75
5x5x 1/2" baltic birch $ 31.75
4x8x3/4" Birch Particle core $ 38.25
4x8x3/4" Birch Veneer core $ 56.75
If you require anything else, feel free to get in touch with me.
Thanks

Project Details: Furniture similar to Ikea in that it can easily be
assembled without the use of tools but that can be assembled in multiple
configurations multiple times.
Materials List: 4 18x18x1.5inches

12 9.5x3/4 dowels
32 5.5x3/4 dowles
54 1.5x3/4 dowels
Comments: This is for an estimate for a school report. The exact
material is variable. We have been prototyping with pine but understand that
isn't the best option for mass production. We are looking for a ball park
number of this sort of material that we can include in a report. Thank you.
