Nearly every great civilization (empire, dynasty, kingdom, etc.) that has risen to greatness has eventually declined significantly or fallen entirely. Why?

1. With your parents or another adult, watch the video, "Decline of Empires" (click for video link).

2. Share your experience with "3rd World Farmer" and how your society struggled and/or failed. *Use your "3rd World Farmer" notes.

3. After watching and discussing the video and your "3rd World Farmer" experience, discuss the following question together:

Name and describe four factors (reasons) that would help lead to the decline (fall, failure, destruction, end...) of a society (country, empire, civilizations, etc.).
*The answers are not found in the video.  You will need to brainstorm and discuss ideas with your parent/adult. If possible, provide specific examples to support you claims. You may want to take notes during your discussion.

4. Write and post your response in paragraph form. (*Due by Wednesday night, 9/26)

5. Read and respond to at least two of your classmates' posts. (Due by Friday night, 9/28)

Four major contributions to a country's failiure are, war, natural disasters, disease, and coups. War, for example, inhibits growth by causing countries to put all of their time, money, effort, and focus into the strength of their military instead of other more important advancements, while natural disasters, like droughts and floods, can cause countries to focus solely on damage control and community health. Disease also plays a major role in a country's failiure by decimating the population, and taking away attention, resources, and time, all of which then become devoted to a cure. While all of the previously mentioned factors rely on the government's intervention, a coup is the destabilization of the government itsellf allowing the country to be overthrown. In conclusion, war, natural disasters, disease, and coups all have their own role in a country's failiure.

There are four major factors that can happen that can lead to the fall of a society. War is the first reason a society can fall because war can seperate countries, destory cities, drain rescources, and even completely get rid of a society. Many wars have been fought in southern asia that have been devastating to both sides. Another factor that can devastate a society is stock crashes because stock crashes can make a society poor and weak because they cant provide enough money. Right here in America we have been experienceing some devastating stock crashes and our homeless and unemployed population has grown. Another reason a society can fall is a lack of education because children and adults need education to build better things and compete with other countries. One of the resons why America is a big society is because 3rd world countries dont get enough education and arent smart enough to compete. An agricultural way a society can fall is in droughts because droughts can kill lots of crops. There are many societies with drought including northern China, India, and the US. All in all, the four main ways a society can fall are wars, stock crashes, lack of education, and droughts.

For a society to decline, four factors such as human failure, natural disasters, religious conflicts, and economic crisis may have occurred during that time period. Human failure includes greed of the people, rebellion, and cruel punishments. As an example is if the leader of that society was greedy and wouldn't put his share/effort into the civilization, the people of that community would become enraged which would start protests and a rebellion most likely. If the leader was agitated with this behavior (Which they most likely will), they would sentence brutal punishments to that group of people which sets a whole impression of the society. Natural disasters are also a huge part in society decline because Japan, for an example, encountered an earthquake/tsunami in March of 2009. This incident caused a majority of the society to reestablish things such as land, buildings (structures), and an advanced protection for any future disasters. Religious conflicts is one of the main reasons why a society will fall because if there are multiple religions in an area, comparisons and debate will start between the religions on which religion is superior, which occurs most often in the Middle Eastern area. Lastly economic crisis is the most looked on subject in modern time, like in the United States, where rocketing health cost, loss of jobs, and unstable stock markets are major problems. In conclusion, all of the factors mentioned above, in one way or another contributes to the downfall of a society.

@BrendanSkwara I think your topic on lack of education was well thought through, since you compared a country like America to some other countries known also as emerging markets or 3rd world countries. I also thought it was smart how you explain the stocks of a society but more on the stock crashes because stock crashes are the more focused on reason of why stocks can weaken a society. Understood your paragraph completely, Great writing!

A society may fall due to many reasons, but four reasons may be drought, war, economic crisis, or natural disasters. Drought has been a major problem this year for America, and has been for previous countries as well. Drought causes the crops to shrivel and die, causing famine and sickness, and water sources to dry up. If all the crops die out, and there is no food left, then starvation or thirst can wipe out a whole civilization. War causes countries to be torn apart, and for countless lives to be lost. Resources are used heavily, and territories may be taken. If your territory is not taken, then your military will still be in bad shape, leaving the country open for attack. Economical crisisses include bankruptcies, debt, and the loss of a leader. If there is not money left in a bank, then supply-giving stores will close, and the people relying on them will have to find supplies elsewhere. Debt is also a problem for our country, and debt is causing more taxes, making the citizens paying them unhappy. Which may lead to rebellion, or war will the people/countries that we owe the money to. Natural disasters , including hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis, are destroying millions of dollars worth every year. If a country doesn't cope with or recover from a disaster quickly enough, then it may lead to further problems like not having enough clean food and water, or having shelter to sleep in. Natural disasters, like volcanoes, can wipe out a whole city or civilization altogether by coming without warning. Some things we can control if they help or not, but controlling the falling of a society is something we haven't mastered yet.

Wars, natural disasters, sickness, and a societies internal problems can all lead to it's failure. Wars drain resources, food, manpower, and distract the society from more important matter, even if won, wars are extremely costly to fight and to repair once it is over, it also leaves the society open to attack while it is still recovering. Natural disasters bring with them elevated crime, chaos, and death, while everyone panicks criminals get get away with more crimes that usual, the chaos and loss of life also, like war, leave the society open to attack. Sickness, if left unchecked, can affect a armies morale and kill off its troops, and if a large strain hits a society, it cause can distablization and like the above, leave it open to attack. Interal problems in a societies goverment can lead to the collapse of a society, corrupt officals, high taxes, an unhappy populance, and poor leaders may lead to rebellion or civil wars, and like all the others, leave a society open to attack. Wars, natural disasters, sickness, and a societues interal problems are all thing that can cause the collapse of a society.

There are many things that can lead to a society's failure. One is war. War can kill most of the population and some times bring sickness. Two is natural disasters. Natural disasters can also kill some of the society, cattle, and destroy houses. A bad leader can also lead to failure to a society. Those are some of the many things that can lead to a society's down fall.

Some factors such as health, wars, natural disasters, and crop failure can lead to the decline of a society.  Health is important to a society because if someone is sick, another preson has to take care of them, and then those people can't work their jobs for that day.  Wars are not the best for a civilazation because then people don't feel as safe as usual and may want to move somewhere else. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornatoes, tsunamis, or earthquakes, aren't appealing if one is looking for a place to live. The last thing is crop failure which is bad because if crops don't grow than the society doesn't get money very easily. If a civilazationhas little to none of these factors it will be more successful for sure.

There are some reasons a society may fall, but four are conflicts, natural disasters, epidemics, and the surrounding area. Conflicts, or wars, can cause the downfall of a society because money and resources will go into providing supplies, and if too many supplies are used, then there may be no more for the society. A natural disaster can ruin a society by causing major damages to any buildings and crops and can cause people to die either from lack of food, water, and shelter or from the natural disaster itself. (drowning in a flood, falling a great distance from earthquake, etc.) Epidemics can cause a society to fail by spreading mass diseases, and if it is deadly, many people can die. A big example of this is the black plague in Europe. Lastly is the surrounding area. If a society happens to be near a volcano,if that volcano erupts, the society could go down under the lava. An example is Pompeii. The volcano in Pompeii destroyed everything, including all the people who lived there. Another example is if a society tried to live in the desert. There is no water, close to no food, and no kind of shelter in a desert. No society could thrive in that kind of area. These are four reasons a society could fall.

Societies decline for many reasons as you can tell from the video Declining Empires. Here are four factors why i think they decline. The first reason why they decline is war because the countries who were defeated would go to other empires. Another reason they decline is government.  Government can terrorize citizens which would make them rebel and create there own continents. Having bad crops is something else that can decline the empires. Having bad crops means no food and some civilizations may leave to go to other countries or empires for food. Health is the last reason  if there is a disease going around or some kind of sickness spreading people will move so they don't get contagious. Third world farmer shows how if there are bad crops you cant sell food for money or have no food to eat which causes they family to die off slowly. These four factors is why i think empires decline over years.

All the great societies that have once been successful, have fallen significantly in there history.  Some reasons that might have caused the failure of their society are, WAR, DROUGHT, NATURAL DISASTERS, AND DISEASES During war time, every society many people have been killed of invasions and cities have been destroyed, making it hard for those societies to rebuild what they once had.   Some civilizations have to deal with climate change such as drought that ruin their chances to make money by trading crops to other societies that have resources they would need to survive. During a drought season, some societies have a hard time keeping their alive when they don't have right resources that they need.  Sometimes countries experience natural disasters like earthquakes that destroy barns, houses and crops.  This makes them suffer because they don't have the food or cattle to survive.  When societies experience war, drought and natural disasters, diseases can spread and lead to the death of an entire population.  Through these examples, I have shown reasons why many societies have fallen.

There are many reasons why countries or empires collaspe or fail to grow .  From sickness to wars and even civil strife, all can have a detrimental effect on socieites.  As an example the great flu of 1918 killed bwtween 20 and 50 million people around the world and affected all segments of society.  Another example is the impact wars can have on a country.  During the last 100 years numerous countries in Europe were taken over by others, collapsed or split into other countries based on the outcome of wars.  Technology also has an impact on socieites.  If countries fail to move forward with technology they end up being inconsequential in the world.  As a final example, civil strife has toppled governments since countries were established.  If we watch today's news we can see this happening in real time.  The people of Spain and Greece are protesting against their governments and if they don't address their monetary problems, they too can fail.  Based on history, it is clear there are many factors which have  an impact on a country's well being.  To prevent a country's failure, people need to work together to improve all aspects of society.

There are an abundance of ways a society may fall, fail or not grow. War being one, droughts being another, chaos, and economy failing. War can fail your society by families being gone and not heling with crops, you can loose land by war, people dying, etc. Droughts are bad for society because not having water is bad because one you can't grow crops, and two you have no water to drink or bathe in. Chaos is horrible for a society because chaos will mess up crop growing, kingdoms fall,  and war causes chaos.. yep. Economy would fail your society because a bad economy means money loss, people loosing houses, therefore not growing crops. Therefore, not being able to trade. These are just some of the ways an economy would fail.

Four factors that may lead to the fall of a society are, war, war is a big factor because it can kill thousands, and even millions in a matter of years, and decline in population could weaken the empire significantly, therefore allowing it to fall under another's power. Another factor could be disease, and disease could kill of a lot of people too, therefore weakening the empire. Another huge factor could be drought. Drought can kill plants, animals, people, and can make a lot of stuff unatainable, like enough herbs for medicen, or it can run dry and lakes or rivers. And finally, another huge impact is stock trade. Stock trade is a huge thing in the success to all civilizations, because it controls who gets what, and how wealthy your country is from trading. If say, Japan has a low trade percentage to what they trade out, they may be divoid of resources they need, and, say, China could overthrow them and make Japan, maybe a prison island like poor little Australia.

Four major factors that would lead to the failure of an empire are war, disease, power over land, and economy. First is war because war makes the land be destroyed by all the fighting. It also affects the country’s economy, troops, and resources.  Second are diseases since diseases also affect their economy and population. It makes people scatter throughout the land too. Another factor would be the power the empire has throughout the world and their conquered lands. This is a really important factor since if they have power over the land their slaves wouldn’t rebel against them. The final factor that would lead to the destruction of an empire would be their location. Location can lead a civilization to success or failure. It would lead to failure if they are located in an area with no resources or form of transportation. Transportation plays an important role because if they didn’t have a form of transportation they wouldn’t have a form to conquer and spread their empire by attacking by surprise. These are the four factors that would lead a civilization to an end.

A society can fall for many different reasons. Some reasons are lack of education and lack of health care, not producing enough crops, and war. Having lack of health care would lead to more deaths in the society and because of this, the society would recieve less tourists. Less tourists can mean less money, and less money can lead to the failure of a society. The lack of education can also determine the rise or failure of a civilization. Lack of education means the people who make decisions won't make as good ones as the people of greater education would. If people with bad education were in lead of a society, then war would greatly impact the civilization. When there is war, the head people of the civilization will pay more attention to making sure their army is powerful, and will forget about making sure that their society's people are doing well. The final reason that possibly can lead a society to failure, is if the society isn't producing enough crops. If there aren't enough crops being produced, that would provide less options for trade, which is a huge factor in a society. These are the four reasons that I think impact a civilizations fall the most.

Four of the major contributuions to the fall of a society are natural disasters, war, unwilling leaders, and disease. Natural diasters can make an impact on the fall of an empire because of the damage it could do physically and emotionally to the inhabitants of the society. For example, countries that have had major flooding or hurricanes are NOT thriving in money or employment opportunities etc. Another big topic is war. War is a HUGE part of the fall of an empire for many reasons. Some of which include tearing families apart, stealing territory, and taking away a countless number of lives. Disease could contribute becuase it could wipe out a whole population very quickly, leaving no army, food or shelter for the few remaining survivors. Disease could also only get to a few people and still be deadly because those sick people cannot work in the fields nor around the house which might cause crops to die leaving no food for anyone. The last thing that could end a civilization is a lazy or unwilling leader. If a leader is unhelpful, he could not help his people which would make them mad and cause an uprising. These are just some of the reasaons a society might fail.

Four major declines in our history is war, sickness, economy, and natural disasters. When wars start we lose money by sending men and women  over to war taking them away from their jobs which cost companies money.  People from the war come back needing medicine, aid and help if they are injured by the war that helped protect our country.  Most importantly, we are losing brave and wonderful soldiers that serve our country and make our life better.
Sickness is another down fall in our society. When people get sick they cannot work or help their family with work, making food, and helping one another. When someone is sick one person has to help the sick person in the family to help them get better. In that process there is two people that are not helping in the family and making it harder to keep up with bills, daily life, and income if no one was sick that burden would be taken away. Another reason our society has a declining  economy and is almost in a depression while  losing money fast is our high percentage of unemployment. When our country has no money we lose jobs and facilities to keep our world going. One of the last of the most horrible declines in history is natural disasters. When a hurricane or tornado hits a city or town it devastates all of the people in it. The people lose all their belongings and all their precious memories they have ever had.It makes our economy lose money too because we spend money to help restore what was once there to help make life how it was once before. This cost our ecomony millions and millions every year.

There are many reasons a society can fail.  Four main reasons include natural disasters, health issues, economic or financial downturns, and conflictNatural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions can wipe out entire cities, often without warning.  Long term droughts can affect crops, making food and water scarce for both people and livestock.  This can then lead to health problems like diseases and starvation.  People living in societies lacking adequate health care and technology often have shorter life spans. Economic and financial downturns can prevent people from having the ability to buy neccessary medicines and antidotes to cure diseases.  These downturns can also lead to poverty among citizens, making access resources such as healthcare, food, shelter, and other necessitites limited.  Finally, a very common reason for a society to fail is conflict with other societies. These conflicts can consist of religion, power of land, and politics which can all lead to war.  Each of these factors can cause the fall of a society.

There are many factors that could contribute to the fall of a society. One reason is by lack of food. This is important because food is essential for a civilization to survive, and if they don't eat, they will starve to death. Another contributing factor to a fall of a society would be war because if everyone is at war, there will be no jobs and they will run out of supplies and money to get the supplies from other people. The third reason is sickness. This could lead to the collapse of a  society because of sickness by having no money for other things such as a military and many people could die, so nobody would be working and nothing would get done. The final reason  would be natural reasons. A natural disaster could harm a society by killing many of the people who live there and they'd be spending all of their money trying to fix the damage done by the disaster. Without a doubt, if one thing goes wrong in a society, everything else could collapse with it.

Four major contributions to a countries failure are, the economy, agriculture, government, and disease. For example, the economy can lead to failure by the cost of living increasing beyond peoples abilities. The housing crisis is causing people to lose their homes. The job market is causing people to lose their jobs or people are fighting for a job that is lower than they are qualified for.

Another thing that leads to failure is the agriculture. The agriculture can lead the country to failure because we might not have enough water to plant crops or the cost of crops could be too high and people won’t have enough money to buy them.

The government can also lead to failure because of war amongst the states (like the Civil War). When two sides cannot agree or meet in the middle and fighting breaks out like family member against family member it will eventually lead to the end of the countries civilization.

The last reason for the failure of a country is sickness or disease. Medicine today is becoming so advance that our bodies are building up immunity. Soon we will not be able to fight off the common cold.

There are 4 major reasons a society could fail. The first is war. War kills people and it could end up with people having to use more resources and it could wipe out a society entirely. The second is natural disasters. Like war it might kill people, destroy resources, and it could kill livestock and crops. The third is having a terrible leader. The terrible leader could make bad decisions which could end up with his country going to war or could cause a financial crisis. The fourth is a financial crisis. Having a financial crisis could lead to less people having jobs and could increase the amount of homeless people. Those are 4 major reasons on how a society could fail.

There are many major parts in a society down fall, but i am going to illustrate to you four of them. The first reason is war, because war takes so much time, money, effort, and people just to stand a chance against your enemy. The second reason is geography , because if you settle your empire or kingdom on a river bank then you will have fresh water, shelter, food, transportation, and protection. On the other hand if you were to settle on a rocky mountain side you would not be able to grow crops as well as others and your water source is limited. Third is disease the reason for that is because disease can kill people, of course, and it can kill your livestock and also what you are hunting for. Lastly, is the economy because if your economy can't pull in enough money then you will not have money to help the war or find cures for disease and you will be in debt. So as you can see those are four major points that societies fall is because they do not keep those things better than other countries.

@Brendan Skwara I agree with your point on wars. War can devestate countries due from the resources going into the army, or even attacks on the country, killing innocent people and possibly destroying important buildings, like factories or even entire cities.

I like Camille's idea about how if a leader is greedy, then it could affect the whole kingdom because the king might only worry about his needs, and not his subjects needs. If the people are not taken care of, then then may die off. Then there wouldn't be a kingdom anymore.

you made perfect scence aboutlike droughts, war and other typical accidents that come over the years of the empire .yes, warning is hard to get out of nature and can defiantly wipe out the human population in seconds. examples of no clean food or water is Pompeii, Indonesia, Haiti and the Gulf Coast of America(New Orlands ) sicknesses also lay in the same lines of contaminated water and uncleaned food; example: India 76% of India has no running water nor do they have toilets.
