How does Winston view the Proles? How are the Proles controlled?
What is life like in the Prole's end of London?

Winston views the Proles as the last of semi-free people and his only
link to the past. Winston knows that the Proles could easily overpower
Big Brother, but they are unable to get organized because the majority
of them are illiterate. Winston wrote in his diary that he got it on
with a Prole prostitute, and this shows that the Proles are not under
the same supervision as Winston is and he takes advantage of this by
relieving his sexual desires with her, although she is like 50.
The Proles live in another part of London, probably in some kind of
Ghetto. They do not follow the same laws and rules as Winston's
people do, and still retain some of the past that Winston never knew.
The Proles life is a lot more simple for the Proles. They seem to have
basic jobs and are allowed to socialize and enjoy pleasurable company
as they please. In the book when Winston is walking in the Proles
section of London, they are hit by a missile of sorts, and it is hard
to say who sent it and why it was targeting them. The way the people
reacted showed that this will frequently happen and their lives still
go on.

If there is hope it lies it the Proles, is what Winston wrote in his
diary. Winston does not know why he this statement keeps coming up, he
thinks that it is totally absurd and never is going to happen. The
Proles are the regular folk like you and me. The Proles do not work
for any of the ministry's. They are kind of like the "forgotten"
people in London. I believe that the Proles have a bad life, to them
it might be good, but just how they only have beer and no whiskey, to
me it shows that Big Brother does not care about them. I do believe
that they have a little more freedom though because of the shop that
Winston goes to. If Big Brother really cared i do believe that the
store would be gone in a heart beat.

Only the Proles are only allowed to do this, and this, and this. It
seems like this phrase is used a lot in the book. They are allowed to
do a lot more than what the average person can. It seems like Winston
goes back and forth with his ideas. He likes that he gets special
privileges and has more freedom but it seems like that he thinks it is
unfair that other people do not get the same rights. He tries to
figure out how life was before the revolution by talking to an old man
but does not get the answers he was hoping for.

The Proles are controlled by the Thought Police. The Proles get a lot
of leeway and if they are caught they can easily make up a lie or
convince them that they are not doing anything wrong. The Proles are
allowed to have sex, be in bars, and Winston goes in the shop where he
had bought the diary.

The Prole's life is the easiest of them all in London. They get away
with a lot that most other citizens would not and they know more
information than the rest of the public.

First of all, the Proles have a lot more rights and freedom than
normal people do and if they get caught doing something wrong, they
can always get out of it easily which is really unfair, and reflect
the society they live in. The Proles live in another part of London,
so they are separed from normal people and they usually go in pubs and
seem to have a bunch of divertissements. They are allowed to drink
beer while people have to drink gin and also they can sleep with women
while it is completely forbidden for normal people. They are also
allowed to get married and divorce which is like a sin for workers.
But the most important is probably that they know a lot more about
before the Revolution and have access to a lot more information.
Something that I thought was weird was that they know when bombs are
going to hit the earth and warn people, so that might mean that it is
organized and that bombs are maybe even sent by the Party...?

Winston views the Proles as almost if he is jealous of them because
they can do almost anything they want. He starts of naming a lot of
things that the Proles can do and normal people can't do because they
will get in trouble. The Proles are allowed to go to bars and if they
get caught doing something wrong they will lie and do something so it
seems like they are not doing anything wrong or against Big Brother.
Winston sees them to be the only way of overtaking Big Brother because
the Proles make up the majority of the population. It seems like the
Proles are still controlled, but not as strict because they can't
really do anything because they are illiterate. At the end the Proles
are getting attacked by bombs, which no one knows who is sending. The
Proles act like it is no big deal and as though it happens often so it
doesn't matter.

Winston views the Proles as free people and is somewhat jealous of
them. He thinks that they have the life that he would want and envies
them for not having to be confided to certain things. In a way
though, I think he feels powerful to them. He lives in an upper class
world to them and feels he is better than they will ever be. He knows
that they could be the most powerful thing to happen to Oceania and is
wishing that they would rise up against Big Brother and end his
reign.

The Proles are controlled by themselves and their own actions. Some
of them base their lives around the Lottery, but most just live life
the way they like to. They do not have to answer to any one like
Winston to Big Brother.

Life is easier for the Proles since most of the Proles are
illiterate. They do not have any laws like Winston has; No sexual
desire, small rations, and can not think about anything that is
against Big Brother. The Proles live in a type of "bad part of town"
because they have a lot of back alleys and they have a pawn shop. No
one watches them closely like Big Brother and the Thought Police watch
Winston. Winston got away with a crime that would not have been
possible under the eyes of Big Brother. He was with a prostitute and
having sex or sexual desires is totally against the rules where
Winston lives. The Proles do not really matter to Big Brother because
BB knows that they will never account for anything. Well, hoping
that.

Winston views the proles as his last hope. His last hope to find out
the past, and predict and change the future. His gateway to the past
is the proles, but the majority of them are stupid. Most of the
cannot remember anything. On page 93, Winston says, "They were like
an ant, which can see small objects but not large ones." Basically,
the proles remember a million useless things from a missing bicycle
pump, to a face expression from a death in the family. If only the
proles were smarter, they could then accomplish to defeat or overpower
the Party.
