Comrade Ogilvy was a fictional character that Winston created
himself. He was very into the war and he recently had "died" in a
battle. Winston created him with a few written lines and a couple of
fake photographs. When he was younger, he was even intrigued by guns
and drums. He remained abstinent and was a nonsmoker, and was very
into family life. I think he created Ogilvy to maybe create a bigger
and better leader for Oceania. He was an inspiration for all of his
courageous acts during his wars. People looked up to him because he
was the epitome of a "hero." Winston wanted to create a likable hero
that people could relate to and would enjoy hearing about. On page
48, Winston says, "It struck him as curious that you could create dead
men but not living ones." Winston wants to create a character that
people will respect and he kind of finds it funny that he can make up
a fake person who is utterly amazing, but the ones that are alive, he
cannot recreate because they are already alive and he cannot make up
anything about them.
