Comment on the contradiction between what is being said by the
telescreen and what reality is like in Oceania. Discuss examples such
as the chocolate ration, razor blades, and the boots.

The telescreen is creating this world that makes everything perfect
for the people of Oceania. It turns things around, if one day they
are saying they are diminishing their rations, then the next day they
are getting that much. For example, on pages 58 and 59 they are
talking about the chocolate rations, the previous day they were
reducing the rations of chocolate to 20 grams but today they were
being raised to 20 grams. Since they are told they are being given so
much they forget everything that happened the previous day. The
telescreen tells them one thing and they believe but in reality it is
not even close to what is really happening.

Everything in Oceania is made to sound so perfect, but it really is
not benefiting the people of Oceania whatsoever. I completely agree
with Sammi when she says that rations are so low, but the next day
they can become extremely high. So far, it looks like the Ministry of
Plenty is not very "plentiful." Rations of chocolate went down and it
seems they are not keeping up with making enough for the place of
Oceania. But then, they go and turn around and there is plenty for
the people, but Big Brother decided to lower the rations yet again.
The men in the story have been using the same razor blade for six
weeks (as discussed on page 61.) Everything was cheap and dirty and
there was really nothing to eat or drink except old gin. All of these
examples can be found on page 60. Basically, everything seems
unplentiful and there is nothing left, so everything is rationalized
to the extreme.

I believe that the telescreen creates very unecessary satisfaction in
the world that they see themselves. When i say that i mean that when
there is a shortage of a certain supply of any kind of item then the
telescreen will tell them that the exact amount of the items that they
have a shortage is turned around to make up the amount that they
gained. Such as when the chocolate ration was downed by 20 percent
instead of telling people that it went down the telescreen said that
it was up by 20 percent, or the time when This is whyI feel that the
telescreen creates a very unruly sense of satifaction througout
Oceania and all the people inside of it.

The giant telescreen in every citizen's room blasts a constant stream
of propaganda designed to make the failures and shortcomings of the
Party appear to be triumphant successes. The telescreens also monitor
behavior everywhere they go, citizens are continuously reminded,
especially by means of the omnipresent signs reading "BIG BROTHER IS
WATCHING YOU," that the authorities are scrutinizing them. As the
Party's mind-control techniques break down an individual's capacity
for independent thought, it becomes possible for that individual to
believe anything that the Party tells them, even while possessing
information that runs counter to what they are being told. The
telescreen is made to sound so perfect, but it really is not
benefiting the people of Oceania. most of the contradiction that we
can see about the Telescreen are, the chocolate ration, when the
chocolate was reducing the rations to 20 gr. but the truth was that
the chocolate downed by 20 gr. also there was really nothing to drink
except old gin and everythinghave to be rationalized to the extreme.
