Steve Hatch Racing Newsletter - Volume 10

Dear Matt,

With the arrival of the summer heat, I now realize that perhaps I was complaining a little too much about the cold weather this last winter! It has been pretty hot and humid at home in New York, and with record June temperatures all across the country, I am sure you all were wiping your brows as well!  It was another wide-open month for me, but with some summer family fun and the 4th of July Holiday, it was a good balance of work and play.

Here is overview of this month's newsletter so you may pick and choose what you are interested in:

roadtripRoad-Trip Recap

After the successful ISDE training camp in Ohio last month, Junior World Trophy Team rider Nick Davis wanted to improve his grass track prowess. He had never really experienced this type of racing format before; 4 to 8-minute wide-open sprints are the norm at Six Days. Nick is already fast and pretty good in the slick stuff, so we worked hard on teaching him to pick the correct lines and quickly assess where the traction is best and worst when navigating virgin, slick grass tracks.  After about 100 laps and 2 tanks of gas, Nick was looking way better.  It will be fun to watch him as he gets this style of racing figured out; look out Slovakia!

Immediately after working with Nick, I jetted out to Montana to work with 4 riders who I have coached in the past. While the four have very different and interesting backgrounds (a surgeon, a judge, a mechanical engineer, and a 17-year-old student who has been studying abroad in Europe), they are a riot to work with. The quartet is quick to laugh and eager to learn, and we enjoyed three days of camping in the woods and becoming better, more-skilled dirtbike riders.

Back in New York for a quick 2 days of family fun at Lake Ontario, I enjoyed some quality time with my wife and daughter before it was time again to take to the friendly skies. I got up Saturday morning at 3:30am (so I could get to spend 1 more day at home in my own bed) and flew to Wichita, Texas.

I had a great time meeting riders and families, handing out trophies, and giving a speech at the TSCEC Banquet in Texas.

I was honored to be the guest speaker at the Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit (TSCEC) year-end awards banquet. While there, I got to meet-and-greet a lot of riders I already knew and meet many others who became friends.  I gave a speech on setting goals and building a winning template to make those goals come true.  Then, I handed out all of the awards that TSCEC riders had worked so hard to earn. It was cool to see so many families there together; as I like to say, "a family that plays together, stays together!"

While I was in the Lone Star State, I spent a couple days coaching some more great riders. I had 3 riders from Houston who wanted me to come down to coach them, so I rented a car and made the 6-hour drive. This dad and his two sons were especially determined to improve as it was 100 degrees and very humid, but they toughed it out and learned a lot in the dry, soft sand.

Next, I was off to Austin for a quick lesson with a rider who has raced the Red Bull Romaniacs Hard Enduro in Sibiu, Romania. He is always looking for the next fun challenge.

Taylor Robert shipped his bike to my house in New York and came out to prepare for ISDE Slovakia.

On my way home, I met up with Taylor Robert at the airport in Missouri, and we both flew back to New York together to get Taylor used to the wet and slippery conditions that he will encounter at the Slovakian Six Days in early September.

Taylor is a fantastic rider and individual; he is very smart and an extremely hard worker. I remember Taylor first starting training with me when he was about 12 years old. We lived 3 doors down from each other in Arizona, and he would come to my race shop gym 3 days a week from 5-6am. He was never late and made it all happen prior to going to school.  Given our long history, it has been fun for me to watch him achieve great success, earning factory rides from Kawasaki and now KTM, winning WORCS Championships and an X-Games Gold Medal in Germany, and being Top American at Six Days twice!

Taylor and I got up early each morning so the grass track would be covered in morning dew. This simulated the conditions riders will face in Slovakia.

Even though he is a factory rider, Taylor still has to wash his own bike when he comes to my house! He's lucky I didn't make him wash mine too!

Taylor and I spent a number of days fine-tuning the riding style and techniques he will use in Slovakia. Hailing from Arizona, Taylor does not have an abundance of experience in wet, slick conditions, so we got up early day-after-day to take advantage of the heavy dew fall to simulate rain. It was a fine balance between the wet, slick grass and the limited grip of the FIM-mandated Ecology tires to keep it upright and on the gas, but Taylor adapted well, and I have no doubt that he will deliver an excellent performance in Kosice.

The Body Likes to be Challenged

When I hired Dr. Jeff Spencer to train me during the height of my professional racing career, he helped me learn how the body works, and he always stated that the body loves to be challenged. I wasn't exactly sure what he meant at the time, but after transitioning into my current coach/mentor role and helping riders become better, I now understand what he was saying.

The body must be challenged; doing the same training and riding routine for an extended period of time will cause you to plateau and not keep on building. Instead, making scheduled, regular changes to your training and riding program helps the body to become better. Why is this? Regularly tweaking your routine challenges the body by targeting different muscle groups, thereby diminishing the possibility of a physical plateau. In addition, mixing it up is also huge on the mental side of things. Doing the same routine over and over again quickly becomes dull and boring, and soon you may find yourself just going through the motions. Changes are key to help you avoid boredom and burn-out.

Keep switching up your riding and training regimen; the longest that you should stay on the same routine is 2-3 months. Try to make changes even sooner and you will stay more motivated, see and feel your body becoming better, and push yourself to the next level!

Some Favorite SHR Quotes

Quotes are not only inspiring; they can be a powerful tool when used at the correct time, especially during visualization and exercise. Here are a few of my favorites:

You can make it happen or you can make excuses, but you can't do both!

Refuse to loose!

If you can dream it, you can live it

Whether you think you can or you can't you are right!

Never weaken!

Success is the inevitable conclusion of hard work and determination!

Here are some more than I have heard from riders, friends, and role models:

Losers quite when they're tired, winners quite when they've won.

-        Ryan Sipes

The harder the triumph, the greater the reward.

-       Destry Abbott

Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.

-       Steve Jobs (Apple)

Find your own quotes that ring true to you and put them in a place where you will see them all the time. This will help to give you that extra push to become the best at all you do!

previewPreview of What's to Come

I am looking forward to another busy month! The near future holds and ISDE boot camp in New York with one rider from Idaho and another from Indiana. After that is my 2-day SHR Camp in New York before I head to North Carolina 10 days of working with Kailub Russell. We will spend some quality time getting him tuned up for Six Days and dialed in for the second half of the GNCC and National Enduro season.

riderSHR Featured Rider of the Month - Nate Nickerson

Nate is a great individual that has a never-give-up attitude and an eagerness to become better.  Coming from the world of mountain biking, he already has the ability to pick great lines (usually because a bicycle does not eat-up the rougher terrain like a motorcycle does). Nate has always been goal-oriented, setting himself up for success in the next tough event or challenge. All of his mental skills are crossing over well into the motorcycle world, and he is putting them to good use by tackling tough events such as Red Bull Romaniacs. I look forward to continuing to work with Nate and helping his motorcycle prowess grow!

Here is what Nate has to say about working with SHR:

There is no doubt that Steve is a great rider. What sets him apart from other coaches is his unparalleled ability to teach, motivate, and support. Steve's championship winning dedication flows right through to his clients.
