TASK: Pick three examples of vivid and powerful imagery from Macbeth's soliloquy and analyse their effect.

MACBETH
(aside)
The prince of Cumberland! That is a step
On which I must fall down, or else o'erleap,
For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires;
Let not light see my black and deep desires.
The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be
Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see.

Good work Archie. I really like this: " So Macbeth instantly recognizes his own murderous subterranean ambition: his self-destructive course is set."

TIP: Try to use a different phrase than 'Shakespeare puts physical things into our mind '
How could this be improved? Anyone else have any thoughts?

Excellent work Claudia. I particularly like this: In addition to this the phrase For in my way it lies creates a sense of a moral boundary which surrounds Macbeth and restricts him from doing what he strives to do.

This phrase could be better though: 'this immediately puts a picture of a strong and noble prince in your head .' How could this be better?

One way you could all improve is to stop using 'This puts an image in the reader head.'

A better phrase would be:

  • This creates a vivid sense of...
  • The creates a startling portrayal of...
  • This elucidates the fact that....
  • This accentuate the feeling of....

Kelly, well done. I really like this:

'...because it accentuates the impression of a spiteful sense which Shakespeare has formed in the play. '

However, you need to work on your structure. Try to organise your work into neat paragraphs where there is on central idea in each one.

Mark, this is not good enough. Please finish this to a standard that is comparable to the rest of the class.

Kelsey, there is some great work in here. I really love this:

Firstly, he uses the images of fire and stars to signify a strong sense of motive and passion for what he is doing, and perhaps fire because it is involving death.

However, this is a bit of a general statement, and doesn't really say anything:

This is very effective as it constantly makes the reader want to know more, and after reading the final sentence, they are ready to know what happens next.

How could this be improved? Class??

Annabelle, I really like this sentence:

Secondly he uses ‘stars hide your fires’ this phrase alludes to the brightness of the star and signifies when he does the action he needs to make sure that no one notices.
