1. Please review all work in the groups and in your folders and post the three most important things you have learned this term.

2. Go to www.amazon.co.uk or any other online site (Guardian Books for example) and post three new books (or books you havent read) that you are excited to read this Christmas.

1. Analytical Phrases and Vocab
  • This is because I think that it is very important and that I can see a real improvement in my work because of this.
  • It makes everything look more professional and gives your work an extra point.

2. The Way to Plan an essay
  • The is very useful because of the way that I find it means I do not leave things out.
  • It works really well with the structures of essays
3. The use of Synthesis in Essays
  • Knowing how to talk about a thesis and then an antithesis to create a synthesis is really useful for writing essays.
  • It means that you get across both sides of the argument.
  • It means that you get to give your own opinion leading from the points previously made.

Embedding quotations:
One of the most important things I have learnt so far this term is embedding quotations into text. This has really helped me to analyse texts much better and also improve my own writing.

New analytical phrases:
Learning lots of new analytical phrases has really helped me especially in my writing because now I have a doc with lots of them on it so when I am writing I can refer back to these really good phrases.

Using Google Docs:
Probably most importantly I have learnt how to use Google Docs which has enabled me to share my work with the rest of the class and also read other people’s work and get new ideas from their writing as well.

I have learnt how to embed quotations, this is effective because it makes the sentence flow quickly and it sounds better.
I have also learnt some analytical phrases which helps my range of vocabulary and makes the sentences more interesting.
I have learnt how to construct an essay which is called the five paragraph essay. With that the anti-thesis and the thesis, which takes one point and then gives another point on the other side.

What I have learnt in English:

  • New, advanced vocabulary
  • Poetry and Writing Techniques
  • How to structure an essay
  • Analytical Phrases
  • Ways to summarise a poem or piece of writing, from different perspectives
  • To identify the main poetic features in a poem
  • Thesis, Antithesis, Synthesis of writing an essay
  • Ways of answering questions with depth and detail
  • How to turn an old fashion poem into a modern short story
  • Embedding Quotations

These things have helped me to advance in writing and have helped me to understand the logic behind the english language and the complexity behind a great piece of fictional or analytical writing. All of the skills have also helped me to expand my knowledge of when analysing work or poetry and then all the new analytical phrases and vocabulary have helped me to structure my writing better, as well as embedding quotations which when done properly the way we have learnt it will help to boost our marks. Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis has assisted me when structuring an essay, which we also learnt this year. Overall, i have also learn much more in such a small amount of time, which has allowed me to enjoy learning English more and I look forward to learning even more.

The Three Books that I want to read for Christmas are:

Ultimate Fashion Star - Biography Bundle
Three Cups Of Tea - Greg Mortenson
Noughts and Crosses - Malorie Blackman

Skills and Techniques - Michaelmas Term

  • I have learnt new vocabulary this half term. This has helped me to expand in my language and ability to writing, making my work more advanced and effecting.

  • I have learnt a variety of poetry skills. These have helped me to write an effect poem or short story of my own and to analyse and be able to see them in a text.

  • I have learnt how to link quotations into text, embedding quotations. This has helped me to increase my ability and helped me to verify and make my work more developed.

  • I have learnt how to answer questions clearly and in depth using paragraphs. This helps me to structure my work clearly and answer each question with more depth and meaning.

  • This half term we have read many Analysis’s and picked out many key and critical phrases. I am now able to write using Analytical phrases. This has really helped me to progress in writing in general.

  • I have learnt to write using very detailed and good quality phrases using the new vocabulary and analytical phrases being able to use them to expand my writing further and to explain my ideas effectively.

  • Finally I have learnt how to use the ‘Thesis’ ‘Synthesis’ and ‘Antithesis’ which has helped to expatiate on my essays and explore further what I am writing.

Overall I have learnt a lot of key things this half term in English. I have enjoyed it so much, as we have learnt so much in a short amount of time, therefore it never gets boring. There is also always a chance to give your own opinion which i really enjoy.

What Have I Learned This Term?

1. Shakespeare invented a massive range of words and phrases that are used in the world today. This helps us look further into how much our language has developed over time, and we can also then pick out phrases in Shakespeare’s literature that he came up with himself. Some examples are:

vanished into thin air in a pickle

tongue-tied                        fair play

teeth set on edge                                dead as a doornail

laughing stock                                Obscene

amazement                                lonely

luggage                                eyeball

2. If you are stuck with structuring an essay you can refer to the suggested ‘5 paragraph essay’ to get you started. This is the format:

  1. INTRODUCTION
  2. POINT/THESIS 1 (eg imagery)
    1. sub thesis 1
    2. sub thesis 2
    3. sub thesis 3
  3. POINT/THESIS 2 (eg structure)
    1. sub thesis 1
    2. sub thesis 2
    3. sub thesis 3
  4. POINT/THESIS 3 (eg language)
    1. sub thesis 1
    2. sub thesis 2
    3. sub thesis 3
  5. CONCLUSION

3. A range of new vocabulary from a number of renowned poems to give me a wider range of words to use in my writing and to help me understand new poems and pieces of literature that I read, Some of the vocab I have learned so far includes:
  1. Entreating- to ask (a person) earnestly; beseech; implore
  2. Yore-  of old; long ago.
  3. Beguiling- to influence by trickery
  4. Placid- pleasantly calm or peaceful;
  5. permeates : to pass into or through every part of

Review of Michaelmas Term

I have really enjoyed this term in English. I have generally improved all-round.

The main things I have been surprised about is the amount of work on our computers, and have found it to be a much more effective way of learning, and takes out the laborious process that you might have to do if working on paper.

The three main things I have learnt are:

1.                               How to effectively look at a poem and then quickly find techniques they use, for example he work I and Jackson did on Lady Macbeth’s speech.

2.                               The second is probably just reading and listening to Shakespeare, and looking at the deeper questions that Shakespeare poses in his work.

3.                               Finally, I really enjoyed reading Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, in particular The Raven and the Tell-tale Heart.
