MQTT and iOS: Is it possible to use MQTT to do the notification?

Is it possible to use MQTT as background notification on iOS devices, like iPad, iPhone? 

Based on my understanding on iOS, it seems all application will be terminated in a short time after it is not in the foreground. Is there any method to make MQTT running on the background?

You can use MQTT to push while the app is running. 

I think however that when it is in the background you need to use Apple push notifications.
