Dear Friends:

This is to invite you to a public hearing of whistleblowers from across the country, who have faced intimidation and violence (often fatal) in pursuit of their work in the public interest. Whistleblowers such as Mangla Ram, Nokha along with
family members of murdered whistleblowers such as Ram Thakur, Satyendra Dubey, Niyamat Ansari, Lalit Mehta and others will testify in front of a jury of eminent persons such as Justice Shah, Binayak Sen, Vrinda Grover, Parveena Ahangar etc to look at the individual circumstances of their attacks and the response of the state thus far.

The purpose of the public hearing is to highlight the continuing attacks on whistleblowers and identify the mechanisms to provide protection and redress to individuals working to expose corruption and wrongdoing. While the Whistle Blowers Protection bill was passed by the Lok Sabha in the 2011 winter session of Parliament, there has been no movement on the Bill since. Unfortunately, the urgency for such a bill was further underscored as two whistleblowers were fatally attacked in just the last month: Ram Thakur of the Bihar MGNREGA Watch and Dwarka Prasad Kosle in Chhattisgarh. Countless others continue to face intimidation and violence.

Likewise, the much needed Grievance Redress bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in December 2011 and was referred to the Standing Committee. The Standing Committee submitted its report and the cabinet cleared the bill on March 7, 2013. The bill is now awaiting introduction in the Parliament.

NCPRI has thus organized this public hearing before the Parliament session reconvenes after the break to demand the immediate passage of a strong whistleblowers protection law and an effective grievance redress law. We request your participation and solidarity for the same.  Please circulate widely.

Date: April 19, 2013
Venue: Deputy Speakers Hall, Constitution Club, Delhi
Time: 11:00 am - 3:30 PM

Warm regards,
Nikhil, Anjali and Venkatesh

Dear Rolly,
I am very sorry. I along with the wistleblower from Manipur could not attend the meeting due to sickness of my wife. The wistleblower, who was detained NSA in the year 2009 is engaged in a campaign regarding child soldier. At the same time we could not take train ticket for the meeting because of Manipur situation.
In future programme, I 'll try to participate in such meeting.I hope that you will send me a report of the meeting.

yours

Joykumar, Imphal, Manipur
