I've been trying to get my AM server to play custom noises using the Playnotification action. However, the list of possible notification sounds that Playnotification offers is completely unrelated to the notification sounds that Android thinks it has. So if I add a new custom sound to Android, I can use that as an Android app notification just fine. However it does not become available for AM to use. Am I missing something here?

Hi Doug - the notification list is coming from android, but I'm not sure how they get filtered/selected.  I think it depends on what types the android vendor and the android version supports.  It may differ by ring tone vs notification tone and wav vs ogg vs mp3/4 vs others.  If you can, try to figure out which tones are showing up and if there's a file type they're expecting/supporting.  You can usually find online tools to convert between types.

Thanks Mike, I'll continue to research this. I suppose my underlying question was why does AM get a different list  than Android itself? And is it just me, or does this apply to everyone?

The list comes from androids "RingtoneManager" API so my guess would be it's odd for everyone but which ones show up depends on which phone they have...    On my g9 I added some mps3's to my ringtones for use in alarms, and they show in AM.  It was too long ago to remember specifics but I did find not everything I added as a custom ringtone would show up.

Thanks Mike! That was the clue I needed. If I copy an audio file into the ringtones folder (rather than into notifications), then it gets picked up in the list that AM finds. Still all very mysterious (to me) and I've only tried this on my carry phone so it may not be a total solution but definitely a step in the right direction.
