Hello Institutional Representatives,
APPAM is hosting our first Student Brown Bag event and we would like to invite your students who may be in the DC area this summer to attend.
The event will be on Tuesday, July 21st from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the University Club in Washington, DC. The club is located less than four blocks from both the Farragut North and Farragut West Metro stations so it is easily accessible via public transportation. This event is free to attend and complimentary cocktails and appetizers will be provided.
The topic we will discuss is Big Data and Science & Technology Policy. David Johnson from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, David Hart from George Mason University, and Amanda Parsad from Abt Associates will attend to share their experiences on how they use the tools and techniques associated with managing, studying, and applying this newly acquired data within the policy community. This is a great opportunity for your students to network with professionals in the field, discuss research ideas, and make partnership for the future.
We are very excited about this event and were hoping you could forward the announcement below to your student distribution lists, discussion groups, and listservs. This event is open to both member and non-member Masters and PhD policy students.
To register for the event, students will need to RSVP to me at mgr...@appam.org by Friday, July 17th. Attached is a flyer for additional event details.
Thank you very much and if you have any questions please let me know.
Best,
Meghan

The era of big data is here. Newly available data from sources such as administrative records, mobile devices, and wireless sensors are transforming our world and the practice of science every day. Some view this explosion of data as beneficial – offering information to policymakers that is much more current, granular, and richer in environmental information than survey data. However, others see challenges such as privacy issues, limited comparison groups, and quality issues —all of which may lead to incorrect policy formulations.
Practitioners specializing in big data, science and technology, and data collection and analysis will be available to answer questions from students and discuss topics such as:
· How are the federal government and private sectors using big data?
· What is the proper trade-off between privacy rights and data-driven innovations?
· How do the challenges associated with newly acquired, more readily available data affect data collection and analysis?
· How is big data being taught to policy students?
· What changes are we seeing in science and technology policy due to advances in data collection?
We invite policy students of all levels to join APPAM members who specialize in and work with big data analysis to share their experiences on how they use the tools and techniques associated with managing, studying, and applying this newly acquired data within the policy community.
Brown Bag Speakers:
David Hart, PhD – Professor, George Mason University School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs
David Johnson, PhD – Chief Economists, U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis
David Morar – PhD Student, George Mason University School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs
Amanda Parsad – Senior Scientist, Abt Associates
While this event is free to attend, space is limited. Please RSVP to Meghan Grenda, mgr...@appam.org, by Friday, July 17th if you would like to attend. Complementary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
