i have a client that wants a domain that is currently pending delete. what's your best approach landing it? it was not their domain. it's a made up word, demand should not be very high, but i guess you never know what the domain market will value.

pool, snap, jet.... do you recommend backordering at all these places? any others? at this point does it matter where it was originally registered?

Google "back order domain" - GoDaddy (ugh, but you can always transfer away) and other registrars offer a service to snatch it up as soon as it's available. Doesn't matter where it's been registered they all have access to the same global DB.

But there are no guarantees (though most don;t charge if they can’t acquire it), and it costs more than a normal registration.

Keep in mind that even though there may not appear to be demand some squatters will snap up domains just because they were previously purchased at one point solely to run ads (e.g. if it existed there may be traffic/backlinks they can monetize).

You could almost just back order the domain name from multiple domain registers as long as they have a refund policy. And then the one that snatches the domain name for you will be the one you pay. This could increase your chances.

I've had to deal with people registering my domain name and its no fun. They have computer systems monitoring the domain registry trying to snatch everything up.

I'm looking forward to hearing back from you!

i put in backorders using snapnames, namejet, pool, and pheenix. i've registered and transferred lots of domains but this is the first one i've had the honor of trying to grab via drop and backorder. i guess my domain habit is not so bad.

here's an update for those interested. so i put in four backorder requests for a domain in "pending delete" status, using snapnames, namejet, pool, and pheenix....

i was able to get the domain. snapnames was the service that was able to grab the domain name for us. the user experience of snapnames, and really all of them was less than desirable, but it worked. it helped to closely monitor what was going on. i never did receive an email from snapnames until the last step where it was placed with a registrar. that includes no email when i created an account, when they were able to capture the domain, and even when i paid. it really seemed like i was running in the dark. but, it worked.

namejet's ux and design was more polished. pool ux was lacking and design was very basic. pheenix seemed like a prototype with how primitive it was. but with it being very basic, i found the ux was probably less frustrating than the others.

so that's it, and i didn't even spring for any other domains i stared at for too long.  :)

the other ripple to this chip is my bank put a hold on my credit card in the midst of creating accounts with all these places because it triggered an alert for possible fraud happening. maybe they sensed how shady some of these sites looked.  :)  that's fine with me. nice to have a bank watching out for you.
