Desktop authentication for AWS

Has anyone here gotten set up to authenticate with AWS directly from their (hopefully Linux) desktop?

In other words, set up so that you can log into AWS without using a phone for the authenticator app?

 

If so, I'd like to get some advice about that. The instructions at AWS look pretty complicated (to me) and there appear to be at least two ways I could go (desktop app and hardware key). I'd like to figure out what the most probably path to success is before starting down one of these roads.
