What TLDs do you use for development?

Just curious what Top Level Domain (TLD) you use when sharing development progress or staging sites with customers?  For example, I use [subdomain].websitestaging.site, where "[subdomain]" is the customer name/url.

It looks like .dev domains are now available for cheap, but .staging is not available as far as I can tell...

I use a sub domain of my main domain. Never thought of using a .dev or .staging site. It's a wonderful idea.

I will definitely look into it now that I am doing a few sites.

Regards

Toby,

When I've done staging manually in the past, I've used .site for an alternative TLD—why? Not necessary, I just like the look and sound...but easier to use subdomains.

Automated staging at a host can be easy to customize with custom domains rather than some meaningingless alpha-num staging name . For example with Cloudways, I'll set a  custom domain with a subdomain that Elementor allows for licensing purposes: stage. , staging. , test. , dev.

Easy & cheap,

Hey Toby!  I bought a dev domain several years back because I decided I wanted to keep my primary domain free and clear of other dev traffic.  I just create subdomains on the dev domain and it works as it well.  If the client insists, I will use a subdomain on their domain. Hope this helps!

Best!
Matt

We used to use .dev at WDS but had to say goodbye when it became a "real" TLD. Now we use .test

I push for creating a staging site on the same server the production site will be hosted on, meaning that URL can be whatever the host provides. That way, I can optimize the site where it's going to live and do it before it's launched. I personally don't think it's important or all that meaningful to use some kind of branded domain. If I have no other alternative, I'll use "clientname.johnvisser.net" and put it on the server I use.

Hi Toby,

Like John, we usually try to put staging servers on the same server as the main server, so we can be sure no other configuration problems arise. We will use a subdomain of the main domain, such as “staging.client.com” or “knot.client.com”. For our own local development we use Local by Flywheel and domains like “client.local” which are only accessible on our development machines.

The nice thing about not using a separate TLD is that we do not have to worry about registering any new domains in the process.
