Here’s a radical suggestion for your next networking event: arrive without a goal.  Sure you have probably heard that you should have a goal when networking. That’s mostly true.  Having some sort of endgame down the road that you are working towards makes sense.  However, try just one event when you don’t pay any attention to your long-term goal.  Talk to people in industries that have no relation to yours.  Spend more time listening than talking. Talk more about your life than your career.  Tell your best jokes.  Ask about stuff you have always wanted to know about, not just the usual polite chatter.  You may be surprised how much stronger the contacts you make on that day are when compared to your usual success-driven approach to network-building.  Try it at our next event.
