hey guys,

the results of the exam, as well as of the project blogs and presentation+demos were just published to:

note that your final number of points is the sum of your exam points and up 20 bonus points from your project work! the final grades will be published and submitted to the prüfungsamt, after each group has submitted their video and returned borrowed hardware! So please don't delay it for too long.

you can review your exam on the 5th of march between 11AM and 1PM in Auditorium 1 in the 20th floor! the correctors will be available for discussion during that time.

cheers
robert

Well, there are 20 bonus points for the exam to be earned. The bonus points are Blog, Presentation and Video, which are 400 points in total (according to the spreadsheet). Thus 20 points equal 1 bonus point for the exam.

And typically grades are calculated as follows:

95-100% 1.0
90-95% 1.3
85-90% 1.7
80-85% 2.0
75-80% 2.3
70-75% 2.7
65-70% 3.0
60-65% 3.3
55-60% 3.7
50-55% 4.0
< 50% 5.0

But a confirmation on Robert's side would be great ;)

hi moritz,

thanks for the help, but i meant the mapping between final points and grades. (100p -> 1.0, 50p -> 4.0)

thanks

@Moritz: yes, that's probably the grading scheme that we will use, as the results quite good this semester.

for the bonus points it's a bit different: we declared in the beginning that you need at least 60% of the project points and everything above that threshold will be bonus points. so every 8 points above 240 counts as one bonus point in the final grade.

Sorry, now I'm a bit confused. Does that mean that all the grading system has changed now? So the 20% bonus for the exam aren't the project points anymore? And we have to get other points above 240points from what exactly? Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Robert,

this is the first time I hear about the 60% threshold for the *project* and I am probably not the only one. The other times 60% always referred to the points needed to take the exam. Which makes sense that people who don't invest any time in the exercise cannot take the exam. But this threshold doesn't make any sense for a project which is not necessary to do for the exam. It's a bonus and now you add an arbitrary threshold to the mix.

This is also unfair to the people who only had little time to invest into the project, because bonus points are bonus points. They would have been better off not doing anything. I don't want to say that the project was unnecessary, but rather this information had to be said and written somewhere. Then it would make a sense to say that we have to get 60% also in the project to take the exam.

What I want to say is that you should calculate the project bonus points according Moritz' scheme:
Well, there are 20 bonus points for the exam to be earned. The bonus points are Blog, Presentation and Video, which are 400 points in total (according to the spreadsheet). Thus 20 points equal 1 bonus point for the exam.

Also this probably doesn't change anything for me personally.

Best,
Felix

I must confess that I agree with Artjom's opinion. The grading system and the requirements for the exam seem a bit arbitrary. First the confusion about whether we need 40% or 60% in the assignments in order to take the exam and now I too hear the first time about a threshold for bonus points.

I'm just being honest and whether I get a .7 or .3 grade does not make a big difference since it's my last master's course I have to take. But I think there are several people who are in the beginnings of their Master's/Bachelor's study where grades do matter a lot!

Sincerely

I also agree with Moritz and Artjom. I mean this way of grading would've been ok if everybody had known about it from the start. But now it leaves some of us with no points at all instead of 10 points or sth. and people weren't aware of that. As I understood it in the beginning the 60% referred to the assignments and not to the project?

c'mon guys, of course you would all "agree" to get more points! :) we won't discuss about this here. the grading should not be such a big surprise four you, since it was defined exactly like that in the first exercise already (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5505209/mpi/00-intro.pdf) and was mentioned a couple of times in the course. also if you are not sure about things: don't assume, ask!

besides that, moritz's calculation does not even make sense: it would mean that everyone gets 12 bonus points per default for doing the minimal required effort. that's not exactly a bonus, is it? it's also not fair for those who invested significantly more in the projects than others.

Too bad those two slides were not available online, but I guess you announced this. Please include those in the lecture slides so they won't get lost for the next course.

Hey Robert,

we already returned our Kinect but we still can't see our final grade. When will you upgrade the list?

Thanks,
Max

Where am I supposed to return the camera?

you can bring it to the reception desk in the 18th floor at any time and ask for me. if i am not there, you can just return it at the desk, but remember to post your name to the device then, so i know who has returned their devices.

cheers
