Dear Sir/ Madam,

The Indian Institute of Public HealthDelhi (IIPH-D), established by the Public Health Foundation of India (www.phfi.org), has successfully been functioning since past 7 years as one of the nodal institutions for public health education, advocacy, research and practice by providing quality public health training to graduates of diverse disciplines. Apart from conducting full time academic courses, we also have been organizing several short term trainings. As a part of ‘Workshop Series 2014-2015’ we are inviting applications for a five day workshop on ‘Analytical Methods for Categorical Outcome using STATA’  scheduled on November 24 – 28, 2014.
Dealing with categorical dependent variable in analytical epidemiology involves the use of statistical methods that are different from those traditionally used. In particular, the application of logistic regression requires the understanding of intricacies, concepts and interpretation that are different from a linear regression that most of us are familiar with. This workshop is intended to provide a sound grounding in analytical techniques surrounding categorical outcomes and adequate skills to perform such analyses using STATA. This workshop will cover key issues surrounding the principles and application of logistic regression including fundamentals such as cross-tabulation, chi-square test and odds ratios. Participants applying to this workshop are expected to have knowledge in basic biostatistics.

At the end of workshop, participants will gain theoretical insights and applied skills to address research questions involving categorical dependent variable. S/he will be confident to use STATA to conduct more advanced statistical work on their own data.

Contents
  • Brief review of statistical and epidemiologic concepts
  • Exploratory analysis: producing tables and descriptive statistics (Chi-square and McNemar’s test)
  • Odds and Odds ratio, stratified analysis (Mantel-Haenszel Test)
  • Logistic regression (simple and multiple) and interpretation of coefficients
  • Conditional logistic regression
  • Interaction effects
  • Fitting and evaluating models
  • Introduction to multinomial logistic regression

Who should attend?
This course is appropriate for researchers from varied profession (such as medicine, epidemiology, public health, life science, social science, biostatistics etc.) with exposure to basic statistical methods and theories. It will further benefit those who are already using statistical software packages like SPSS and STATA on a regular basis in their day to day work and looking to update and enhance their statistical knowledge and skills.
