Dear Sir/Madam,

Greetings from Public Health Foundation of India !

The Indian Institute of Public Health, Delhi (IIPH-D), established by the Public Health Foundation of India (www.phfi.org), has successfully been functioning since past 7 years as one of the nodal institutions for public health education, advocacy, research and practice by providing quality public health training to graduates of diverse disciplines. Apart from conducting full time academic courses, we also have been organizing several short term trainings. As a part of ‘Workshop Series 2014-2015’ we are inviting applications for a four day workshop on ‘Sample Size Estimation and Sampling Techniques’ scheduled on July 15-18, 2014.

Sample size estimation is one of the key activities undertaken while designing any research study. An adequate (not less and not more) sample size is important for ethical, scientific and logistic reasons. This workshop will introduce the statistical concept behind sample size estimation and go on to have practical exercises for sample size calculation of various commonly used study designs and statistical tests. STATA, excel sheets and “nMaster” will be used for practical work. Appropriate sampling techniques are essential to avoid selection bias and improve generalizability of study findings. In this workshop, basic sampling techniques and practical advantages and disadvantages of each of the methods will be discussed.

Contents

• Statistical principles in sample size calculation
• Relating study design and objectives with sample size calculation
     o Prevalence and incidence studies
o Comparison studies (2 and more groups)
     o Cluster designs
• Sampling techniques
     o Probability sampling methods
     o Non Probability methods
• Randomization methods

At the end of the workshop the participants will be able to take decision on the sample size calculation method given the study design, appreciate the effect of assumptions on sample size calculation and choose an appropriate sampling technique given the sample size and research question.

Who should attend?

This workshop is suitable for researchers in the area of public health, clinical care and social science. Workshop participants are expected to know basic biostatistics and should be comfortable with the use of excel sheets.
