Sub: Formation of SRMSPH Alumni Association
Dear Friends,
Greetings from School of Public Health, SRM University! We are all in different stages of our Public Health careers, thanks to our alma mater, SRM-SPH. We know very well that all of us carry fond memories of our times at the School and we are proud of our institution. Now it is time for us to come together and form an alumni association so that we can network and collaborate as members of a fraternity.
Over a few informal discussions the following points have evolved regarding the scope of having an alumni association for SPH
The immediate needs for the establishment of the alumnus body are:
We are now writing to you to understand the interest amongst you towards forming this association. We also want to get your critical inputs on the organization, functioning and other aspects of the association. Please take time to reflect on these and write to us as soon as possible on the following points:
Looking forward to your inputs and insights! It would be wonderful to kick start our Alumini on the eve of New Year 2015.
Best wishes and regards,
Ajoke Akinola Basirat (MPH batch of 2010)
Vijayaprasad Gopichandran (PhD batch of 2014)

The news of an alumni is overwhelmingly joyful to me.I feel this would mean there is at least a platform where we actually meet and discuss things and take the word social outside the virtual world. About the ideas of advisory group and trust I feel it should gradually evolve from the meetings.and sharanya I guess you are writing too many proposals these days..any ways keep on the good work.hope to see you all very soon.
Cheers

Dear FriendsGreetings !!!Glad to know that we are shaping up to form our own alumni. Thanks to all who are initiating this process. On a quick note about fees, I feel it is the responsibility of the alumni to build themselves and the alma matter. Hence having a fees would not be the only strategy, but also open donations and contributions to it would make more volunteering. On the other hand it is also uncertain on how long volunteerism works, hence this needs continuous reflections to place our values and ethics in the formation of alumni. It would be good to have the PhD scholars linked to SPH as a part of Alumni along with Masters, Post grandaunts and short term fellows to build our network dynamically. While involving the short term fellows again we need to revisit about the membership fees norms for them.I also feel it would be better to have a Advisory group for our Alumni who are not a part of SPH faculties / students. They could be drawn from the network of Senior Public Health Professionals to guide the Alumni.Towards long run sustainability, transparency of the processes and accountability to the members would make the alumni more inclusive, hence it would be important for look at our bye laws from these lens also.I would like to know the rationale behind registering the alumni as trust at this point of time, strategies and criteria to form governing body and executive committee if thing is in mind.I am also wondering if we are over ambitious at this point to form it as trust. Since all of us have difference of opinion, interest and principles the question that rises to my mind is how to create solidarity towards Trust's objectives, vision, mission and functions. To this note I feel it would be better to function initially as an alumni and later together we can be more inclusive to form a trust which could avoid most of the loose ends. Hence I certainly feel we should need an alumni, but the question is we becoming as a trust at this point. Hoping to hear from larger group on this discussion. Sorry, this is not to discourage any of our initiative but I am just trying to be devils advocate.I reserve my suggestions on spicing up since I would like to get more clarity on role and functions of our Alumni / Trust to figure out more appropriate activities. Thanks to all the initiators once again. This is a great effort.-Sharanya ThanapathyResearch Assistant - Health Governance HubPublic Health Foundation of India
