Sub: Formation of SRMSPH Alumni Association

Dear Friends,

Greetings from School of Public Health, SRM University! We are all in different stages of our Public Health careers, thanks to our alma mater, SRM-SPH. We know very well that all of us carry fond memories of our times at the School and we are proud of our institution. Now it is time for us to come together and form an alumni association so that we can network and collaborate as members of a fraternity.

Over a few informal discussions the following points have evolved regarding the scope of having an alumni association for SPH

  • Connecting all alumni of the School into a single platform
  • Formation of networks and collaborations for knowledge sharing, project work, grant seeking, research and development
  • Support for research and publications in the area of public health
  • Career development and career advancement opportunities for fresh as well as experienced alumni
  • Conducting periodic workshops, seminars, conferences and knowledge dissemination activities.

The immediate needs for the establishment of the alumnus body are:

  • Registration of the SRM-SPH Alumni Association as a Trust with an Executive and a Governing bodyin discussion with  a Chartered Accountant.
  • The details and bylaws have to be worked out after consultations.
  • A website has to be designed for the alumni association.

We are now writing to you to understand the interest amongst you towards forming this association. We also want to get your critical inputs on the organization, functioning and other aspects of the association. Please take time to reflect on these and write to us as soon as possible on the following points:

  1. Hope we all mostly agree to have an alumni association and if so ,what could be the mandates for that association  ?
  2. Should we charge a membership fee and if yes how much?
  3. Who all do you think should be members – Masters students (MPH, MBA-MPH, MSc Biostats/Epi, AFIH) only or Masters students and any students who attend even short term training programs
  4. What can be the event to spice up the association and make it unique.

Looking forward to your inputs and insights! It would be wonderful to kick start our Alumini on the eve of New Year 2015.

Best wishes and regards,

Vijayaprasad Gopichandran (PhD batch of 2014)

Dear friends and believers and Leaders of Public Health!

It feels really great to know that finally we are becoming more strong and more organized. Having an alumni association would really be important as at one place it would bring us all together and at the same time, it would also help us to think, what more could be done towards the improvement in health of the people. Health for all- a long unfinished agenda.

Regarding memberships I would say let us not make it closed to just Masters even the PG Diploma  or some diploma students could also be a part of it. But let us not just keep a fixed fees for the association with an association, it needs to have some flexibility, to be more inclusive and participative.

In respect to the spice up,I feel there could be an annual meet and a periodic meeting of the office bearers of the association.

Let us try to include all.

I hope there must have been a lot of thought in everyones mind, and let us get it more organized and come forwards to the association.

Regards and best wishes.

Nalin

Dear Friends

Greetings !!!

Glad to know that we are shaping up to form our own alumni. Thanks to all who are initiating this process.

On a quick note about fees, I feel it is the responsibility of the alumni to build themselves and the alma matter. Hence having a fees would not be the only strategy, but also open donations and contributions to it would make more volunteering. On the other hand it is also uncertain on how long volunteerism works, hence this needs continuous reflections to place our values and ethics in the formation of alumni.

It would be good to have the PhD scholars linked to SPH as a part of Alumni along with Masters, Post grandaunts and short term fellows to build our network dynamically. While involving the short term fellows again we need to revisit about the membership fees norms for them.

I also feel it would be better to have a Advisory group for our Alumni who are not a part of SPH faculties / students. They could be drawn from the network of Senior Public Health Professionals to guide the Alumni.

Towards long run sustainability, transparency of the processes and accountability to the members would make the alumni more inclusive, hence it would be important for look at our bye laws from these lens also.

I would like to know the rationale behind registering the alumni as trust at this point of time, strategies and criteria to form governing body and executive committee if thing is in mind.

I am also wondering if we are over ambitious at this point to form it as trust. Since all of us have difference of opinion, interest and principles the question that rises to my mind is how to create solidarity towards Trust's objectives, vision, mission and functions. To this note I feel it would be better to function initially as an alumni and later together we can be more inclusive to form a trust which could avoid most of the loose ends. Hence I certainly feel we should need an alumni, but the question is we becoming as a trust at this point. Hoping to hear from larger group on this discussion. Sorry, this is not to discourage any of our initiative but I am just trying to be devils advocate.

I reserve my suggestions on spicing up since I would like to get more clarity on role and functions of our Alumni / Trust to figure out more appropriate activities.

Thanks to all the initiators once again. This is a great effort.

The news of an alumni is overwhelmingly joyful to me.I feel this would mean there is at least a platform where we actually meet and discuss things and take the word social outside the virtual world. About the ideas of advisory group and trust I feel it should gradually evolve from the meetings.and sharanya I guess you are writing too many proposals these days..any ways keep on the good work.hope to see you all very soon.
Cheers

Dear all

My thoughts on SRM SPH Alumni Association

Membership fees
Options – Annual fees or Lifetime membership fee.
Could be a part of the fees paid initially (Student Alumni fee) for future candidates and for past students collected prospectively.
The Fee can support scholarships (Alumni Association Scholarships) to needy students, grants for student research, academic programs, alumni communications, and a variety of cultural, educational, and social programs for reunions.
Joining fee (One time) - Rs 1000/-
Annual Membership fee – Rs 1000/- or Life time membership – Rs 25000/-

Potential membersAny student who has been associated with School of Public Health for at least a semester (6 months) should automatically become a member of its Alumni Association.

Event to spice up the association and make it unique – Networking event that provides brief opportunities for recent graduates to network with alumni 2 or more years out of school.

Best Wishes
Sharmitha Krishnamurthy
MPH 2012-2014

Hello everyone,

I think its a brilliant idea. Sustainability is very important so i think a fee of some sort is kinda necessary, that is in addition to donations etc. However SPH has some foreign graduates how would folks like me pay if/when we finally agree on the amount and other modalities? It would be nice if this would be considered if you haven't already done so. Have a nice day
