Subject: A long primer of neuropathy (also a cheap bedtime sedative)
Neuropathy means disease of the nervous system, but is generally taken
to be an affectation of our peripheral nerves. These nerves that look
like thin cotton twine run throughout our bodies and are outside of our
central nervous system (CNS) made up of our brains and spinal cord. Like
the old jingle "the leg bone's connected to the thigh bone", the CNS is
connected to the peripheral nerves.
These peripheral nerves can be very long in order to reach our fingers
and toes, but they may be short and only need to reach our face or ears.
The longer ones are vulnerable to pressure like secretaries crossing
their knees behind a desk all day or one of us sleeping hard head on
soft arm for hours on end due to MPD fatigue.
The peripheral nerves carry messages to and from the central nervous
system (CNS) and there are 3 kinds: Sensory, Motor and Autonomic. The
Sensory or 'feeling' nerves send messages to the CNS so we can feel
pain, touch, and temperature. They also provide for proprioception, a
sporty word that means a sense of where we are in space and in what
position our body parts are. These sensations are usually the good guys
that warn us when something is wrong.
