If you don't mind running your APC product in "dumb" mode then the
"Linux" Simple Signaling Daemon available at APC's web site works with
just a few source code changes on FreeBSD.

As others have mentioned, you have to have the Smart-UPS, not one of
the other things that APC produces. You also have to have the correct
- non-standard - serial cable.
Personally, I use nut - also in the ports - instead of upsd. It deals
with a variety of different UPS's. The documentation it installs also
covers the serial cable issues pretty thoroughly.

let me ask you this
that cable the one that came with this unit.. should it work? i hope it'll
work ... it's better work:)
Well, the APC docs actually refer to it as "simple" mode I just call it
"dumb" mode. In "simple" mode the UPS only tells you things like when
the battery is in use. If all you want to do is shutdown the machine if
the power goes out for more than a few minutes then "simple" mode is
good enough.
The "smart" mode also tells you things like battery temperature,
remaining power, etc. -- features useful for monitoring your UPS but not
terribly useful if all you want to do is shutdown in the event of an
extended power failure.
