I am here trying to buy a nic (pcmcia) and a pci card both wireless to do
some funny things :-)

Now I saw at the eurobsdcon that a lot of people have bot lucent (orinoco)
and cisco (aironet).
But what about the support for these ones :
D-LINK: DWL-650
Wireless PCMCIA Netgear MA401GE
US Robotics USR132410
CreditCard Bluetooth Xircom CBT
CreditCard wireless LAN Xircom CWE1120
PC Card 2.0 Wireless 3Com 3CRWE73796B-E1
PC Card Wireless 3Com 3CRWE62092A-E1

And which model can I can use on a desktop PC ?

Any hints will be very appreciated.

My DWL-650 works without problems on 4.4-stable using the wi driver.

Likely not supported.

: CreditCard wireless LAN Xircom CWE1120

I think this is a rebadged Cisco/Aironet 340. If so, it works.

No sure about this. I have a 3CRWE737A. It doesn't work. But this
may be different.

No clue.

Any that work on laptop and an access point will work in a desktop.

Does WEP work with these ? They're damn cheap right now.

Yep. I have this from using them;

# Xircom rebadged Aironet PC4800 11Mbps 802.11 wireless NIC
card "Xircom" "Wireless Ethernet Adapter"
config 0x5 "an" ?
insert /etc/pccard_ether $device start
remove /etc/pccard_ether $device stop

Not the last time I tried one, but it might be a prism II.

Fine, any clue also on the LAN Xircom CWE1130 ?
I think it must be the version with the 128bit encryption.

>: And which model can I can use on a desktop PC ?

I know this one, but I really like to try first to put a nic card wireless
(or an adapter for a pcmcia card) on a FreeBSD box.
If none are supported I'll revert to the access point solution.

So the question was: which kind of adapters is supported ? Anyone that are
using some of them ?

Netgear pcmcia adapter MA301 and its card:
http://www.netgear.com/product_view.asp?xrp=11&yrp=30&zrp=90
http://www.netgear.com/product_view.asp?xrp=11&yrp=30&zrp=91

Zyxel ZyAIR PCI Adapter with its pcmcia card:
http://www.zyxel.com/product/wireless/pciadapter.htm
http://www.zyxel.com/product/wireless/zyair100.htm

I see that someone is using them, but having problem setting the pccard
zyxel at 11mbs (it stops at 2mbs).
The message doesn't say which branch of FreeBSD was used (4.4-STABLE or
5.0-CURRENT, even if I presume the second based on the fact the adapter is
cardbus). The adapter seems able to use other cards too ...

Buffalo Tecnology ISA (and PCI) adapter:
http://www.buffalo-technology.com/products/airstation/wliisaop.html
http://www.buffalo-technology.com/products/airstation/wlipciop.html
http://www.buffalo-technology.com/products/airstation/wlipcml11.html

Dlink pci card dwl520:
http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/dwl520/
or the dwl500 with dwl650:
http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/dwl500/
http://www.dlink.com/products/wireless/dwl650/

Any other pcmcia adapters that work on a FreeBSD box ??
Any other wireless nic ?

Thanks to everyone for attention.

I'm using an Intel 2011/PRO with -current in an IBM thinkpad.
Note, this is the older 2011 model (DSS, 802.11b and WiFi) and
not the newer 2011B. It is a Symbol Spectrum24 OEM product.

I know for a fact that Lucent cards work together. I know that the
D-Link Air that I have works in the "demo ad-hoc" mode that Lucent
works in. Some other cards work, others don't. I'm told that other
cards work better with 802.11b approved ad-hoc mode.

OK. This card is Ricoh 5C477 based cards. I have one, and have
tested it a little and it seems to work.

: http://www.zyxel.com/product/wireless/zyair100.htm

No clue. Should work, btu might need some tweaks.

: Buffalo Tecnology ISA (and PCI) adapter:

The ISA ones work. The PCI ones will likely work. IIRC, the PCI one
is TI 1420 based, and shoudl work. I don't have one of these, so I
can't be completely sure.

: Dlink pci card dwl520:

DLINK uses the simple PLX part on its card. The wi driver has support
for this, but others do not.

I've had reports from my friends in OpenBSD-land that there's a new
PLX-like part that's appearing, but it doesn't work with the plx
code.

: Any other pcmcia adapters that work on a FreeBSD box ??

Most all pcmcia ones work.

: Any other wireless nic ?

The Aironet ones work (the cisco 342 based ISA card works, and I've
tested it recently).

Same answers for both -stable and -current.

They're both Aironet 340 cards. One is the 40bit version, the other
the 108bit version. I've used the CWE1130 quite happily.

You mean the one I send earlier in this thread ? ;)

# Xircom rebadged Aironet 11Mbps 802.11 wireless NIC

card "Xircom" "Wireless Ethernet Adapter"
config 0x5 "an" ?
insert /etc/pccard_ether $device start
remove /etc/pccard_ether $device stop

May work with an 'auto', but I just copied the PC4800 entry. I can
probably find one at work to check with.

Looking at the firmware I have saved from then and the entry, I
believe it is actually a rebadged PC4800. I managed to get another one
that said 'Xircom' all over it but the CIS info says Cisco ;)

Nov 17 15:31:07 disapp pccardd[110]: Card "Aironet"("PC4800")
[(null)] [(null)] matched "Aironet" ("PC4800") [(null)] [(null)]

Just dug it out.

Can you send me a dumpcis of this card so I can add it to the an

I've never managed to make one work at our main office.

wi driver needs to be patched in stable to get the card attached.
The card then acquires its address via dhcp and then no further traffic
is seen by the ip stack.

Any idea ?

Just for grins, did you try booting the -current install floppies
and see if that would bring up the card? Did you look at the
stats on the access point to see if it sees the card, etc?

I have one card that does what you describe under Win2k. I think
the card is bad. I've tried it on several laptops with similar
results. It associates with the AP, but then nothing.....

No, I'm waiting for another laptop (old Dell Inspiron 3100) to try
running current, a few weeks left, as my colleague will get his new
Inspiron 8100 RSN :)

Alan> Did you look at the stats on the access point to see if it sees

Yes, when i try to use the card under FreeBSD, the packet counts on the
AP (Intel AP2011) increase regularly but no packet gets back to the ip
stack.

Well in my case, the card works fine under Win98SE, that's why I don't
really understand the problem.
