have a dell c600 with an ati128 video chipset, am having trouble setting
up the boot splash screen.

per the handbook, i've added this to my /boot/loader.conf:
# splash screen : bmp
splash_bmp_load="YES"
bitmap_load="YES"

i've copied a 256 color .bmp file to /boot/splash.bmp from
http://www.baldwin.cx/splash/saturn_1_320.bmp

but i keep getting the following;

See the "Splash Screen Mini-FAQ" at http://www.baldwin.cx/splash/

Many ATI-based laptops don't have VESA modes that our code likes, so you
may be SOL. There's room for improvement here, should you feel
motivated. 8)

k. so if the results of the second bit of code are null, then it just
doesn't work?

vidcontrol -i mode returns the following:

mode# flags type size font window linear
buffer
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
24 (0x018) 0x00000001 T 80x25 8x16 0xb8000 32k 32k 0x00000000
32k
30 (0x01e) 0x00000001 T 80x50 8x8 0xb8000 32k 32k 0x00000000
32k
32 (0x020) 0x00000001 T 80x30 8x16 0xb8000 32k 32k 0x00000000
32k
34 (0x022) 0x00000001 T 80x60 8x8 0xb8000 32k 32k 0x00000000
32k

but vidcontrol -i mode | egrep 'G [0-9]+x[0-9]+x8' | \
awk '{ print $5 }' | sed -e 's/x8$//'

doesn't return anything.

Basically. My Toshiba Portege 3110CT responds with 320x200 and
320x240.

Mike said in his post, the ATI cards aren't compatible with the
code. You're probably out of luck.

It's only a few seconds of bitmap image. That mightn't be such a big
thing anyway. You could always fix the code and send in patches.

Appologies for the multiple e-mails. It was an MUA problem.

Not to add a new error to the thread, but reading this reminded me of my
splash screen woes. I've got a similar error, but I don't see mention of it
on the mini-FAQ. I also don't know what man pages to consult.

module_register_init: MOD_LOAD (splash_bmp, c0375798, 0) error 2

Kind regards,

Eric I. Arnoth

Check your message log; there *should* be a message from the module.
However, 2 is ENOENT, which probably means you haven't loaded an image.
