Magondu, the General Manager of Kenya Orient Insurance has joined scores of M-Payment experts that will share their thought at the 2nd edition of M-PAY Africa Conference and Expo in Accra in May, 2009. Kenya Orient Insurance pioneered the Mobile Insurance (M-Insure) services in East Africa.
At a cost cheaper than a loaf of bread or a packet of milk, Kenyans can now access a personal insurance cover for Sh30 a day. Dubbed, Safari Bima, the personal accident cover gives a maximum of Sh100,000 in compensation for injuries sustained in any accident within 24 hours of payment. Policy holders will be required to make the daily Sh30 premium when they need the cover through the short messaging service (SMS) on their mobile phones. Mobile operator Zain recently launched its mobile money transfer service, ZAP, in Sierra Leone. Within its first month of operation, the company reports, that about 5,000 subscribers have signed up for the service. ZAP subscribers can use the service to transfer money, pay utility bills, and more.

Vodafone to Launch its Mobile Money Transfer Service M-PESA in South Africa
Vodafone has announced that it is bringing the mobile money service, M-PESA to South Africa, to be deployed by Vodacom and its South African banking partner. With approximately 26 million people in South Africa without official bank accounts, M-PESA will enable millions of mobile phone subscribers who have access to a mobile phone, but do not have or have only limited access to a bank account, to send and receive money via their mobile phones.

Vodafone, Afric Xpress to Launch MMT Services in Ghana
Accra, Ghana: Vodafone on Tuesday signed an agreement with Afric Xpress (AX) to introduce txtnpay services which would allow Vodafone customers to purchase airtime anytime, anywhere via sms message to short code 1075.
