Dear MPAS-Atmosphere Community:

We're pleased to announce that MPAS version 8.2.0 was released on 27 June 2024. A summary of the notable new features in this release may be found through the GitHub release page for MPAS v8.2.0 (https://github.com/MPAS-Dev/MPAS-Model/releases/tag/v8.2.0).

It should be noted in particular that the init_atmosphere_model program in v8.2.0 requires new static files that contain the Noah-MP fields soilcomp, soilcl1, soilcl2, soilcl3, and soilcl4, regardless of whether the model will be run using Noah-MP. The quasi-uniform static files on the mesh download page (http://mpas-dev.github.io/atmosphere/atmosphere_meshes.html) have all been updated to contain these fields. When generating new static files, it will be important to update your geographical data directory using the latest datasets available from the MPAS-A download page (https://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/projects/mpas/mpas_static.tar.bz2).

As always, we welcome any suggestions, bug reports, and other feedback via the "MPAS Atmosphere" section of the forum at https://forum.mmm.ucar.edu/ .

Kind regards,
The MPAS-Atmosphere developers
