We're pleased to announce that MPAS version 8.4.0 was released on 15 April 2026. A summary of the notable new features in this release may be found through the GitHub release page for MPAS v8.4.0 (https://github.com/MPAS-Dev/MPAS-Model/releases/tag/v8.4.0).
Although the web version of the user's guide is not yet up-to-date, the PDF version of the MPAS-Atmosphere v8.4.0 user's guide is available from https://www2.mmm.ucar.edu/projects/mpas/mpas_atmosphere_users_guide_8.4.0.pdf . In particular, the following new sections describe functionality included in MPAS-Atmosphere v8.4.0:
- 3.5 Linking with an external ESMF library
- 3.6 Linking with the MUSICA library
- 3.7 Linking with the PT-Scotch graph partitioning library
- 4.2 Online graph partitioning with PT-Scotch
- 8.4 Large Eddy Simulation (LES)
- 8.5 Model runs on GPUs
