Hi Everyone-

This is a message forwarded from an internal Mozilla mailing list:

"We are planning to decommission MozTrap [https://wiki.mozilla.org/QA/MozTrap], a tool for managing manual test cases. As far as we know, all users have
migrated to alternatives. We plan to shut this system down by Nov 1, 2016."

If you are using MozTrap locally it will continue to work - however the Persona login system is also being decommissioned and you will need to add an alternate authentication method after November.

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for posting this notice, though it is unfortunate- I consider MozTrap to be one of the best open source test case management systems out there. Your forwarded message mentions that users might have migrated to alternatives. It would be helpful if some of those alternatives could be listed here for comparison purposes.

It would also be helpful if any further details could be shared as to why MozTrap fell out of favor at Mozilla, as I have found it to be a capable tool. I don't intend to pry, I'm just trying to gather more information and strategize, as I currently have an instance of MozTrap in production.

Thanks,

Frank

Hi Frank-
The removal of Persona has impacted quite a few Mozilla sites. You can see examples of alternatives such as the use of GitHub, Google, and some with Firefox Accounts. The transition code is up and visible on GitHub for sites like MDN and Addons.

I am glad to hear you've had such a good experience with MozTrap. I wouldn't say it fell out of favor, rather that it suffers from a lack of resources. There are always more good ideas than the people to implement and support them around here! So it is a disappointment, but it isn't the fault of the tool itself.

Cheers,
~Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for clarifying some of the reasons regarding the decommission. I'd be interested to hear more about alternative test case management systems used at Mozilla. I know MozTrap replaced Litmus, but has something new replaced MozTrap? On the commercial side, I know TestRail has grown in popularity, but I believe it remains closed source. Any insight you have regarding potential open source successors to MozTrap would be appreciated!

Thanks again,

Frank

Hey Frank-
Several teams are in fact looking into using TestRail. Open source is preferred, but it's tough [as you likely know] finding a tool that has a lot to offer.

I did ask around and ideally the TestRail implementation will be open to use by contributors, but that is an unknown ways off. And the tool would remain closed source.

Sorry to not have more positive news!

Thanks for the transparency, Rebecca. It's definitely hard to find a full-featured, actively maintained open source solution in this space. At any rate, it's always helpful to know what other teams are using. Thanks again for the info!
