Hi Friends,

Its summer vocation in India. Time for Maker parties in this part of the globe.
We started with trainer workshop. Here is a work from the session.

http://p.webremixes.org/puckjrgr
http://popcorn.webmadecontent.org/y4i

There are more materials but most of it can not be published as they
contain private (private to the group) information. Ideas and narratives
that came out from workshop were really nice presenting people and
events in funny ways.

Bon appetit.

Arun, this Popcorn video on biriyani is wonderful. I love the open source analogy you use when comparing it to Coca Cola and KFC, well done!

Can't wait to see more,

Hi Friends,

We did the first edition of the summer camp (for this summer)!
Here is a report by participants made with X-ray Goggles.
http://p.webremixes.org/espndrrx

For some reason, the WebMaker activities did not turn out to be as exciting as
we thought them to be. During our preparation one of the kids did exciting
work that we shared.

Here is the blog for the camp.
http://spacesummercamp.wordpress.com/

We should be doing another camp soon. May be we can improve then.
There is request from youngsters for similar camp!!

Why do you think that was? What could've made the activities more exciting?

Hi Michelle,

>> work that we shared.
>

> Why do you think that was? What could've made the activities more exciting?

I think it was partly our fault. We have been doing one activity per
day. Participants were
introduced the technology in the morning and was expected to carry out
an activity
with the technology on the same day. This limited the time available
for participants
to come up with interesting ideas. (It did work in most case)

During the pilot we had a kid skill in story telling and familiar with
online video (as viewer).
He could easily come up with video and audio around which a story can be told.
We underestimated the challenge for participants who are not very
familiar with Internet.
(Limit scope of activity and provide resource materials)

One idea for next round is to have some videos without voice like the
Volkswagen advertisement
and ask children to create dialogue. Or may be we ask them to create a
personal story with
photos from their family photo collection. (Introducing their family
or a vocation trip)

As a process improvement, we shall introduce the idea one day before
the activity so
that participants will get more time to come up with their own ideas.

XRay Goggles worked better. Most participants wanted to hack some
news/magazine site.
It was interesting for participants with talent in writing and story telling.

Most of the project (or almost all) the webmaker projects are
culturally rooted in west.
May be some effort is required to localise them or create ones that
are relevant to other
parts of the world. One suggestion is to network with Design schools
in developing
countries like India to create materials for those countries.

BTW We shall soon be introducing Popcorn to Teacher Educators (who train future
school teachers) as tools to make educational materials. Any suggestion or
examples would be welcome.

with regards

Arun , why not give participants some themes to work on with the learned
new technology ? This will help participants to focus on one particular
theme where they can put in their innovation and creativity.

Why not have some activities like , kids will tell a story and we can help
them to build a visual of the story using popcorn . In that case , we can
teach web making as well as tackle this challenge. What do you think ?

This looks similar to my idea above :-)

Have you tried grouping (4-5 ppl a team) the participants to work together
on a theme of their choice with the technology. In our recent event , we
found this idea can do wonders as all creativity and innovation of the team
are put in one place.

Yeah..everybody love working with goggles. It will be nice , if
participants learn how to copy the codes using x-ray goggles and form a
custom page on thimble.

Popcorn is a wonderful tool to make tutorials and educational materials. In
fact , you can introduce popcorn for those educators who teach in schools
as well.

On a different topic , are you based in kerala ? If Yes , FYI Mozilla India
will be hosting Firefoxos Appdays on June 22 in kochi. If you are free that
day , you are invited to that event. I will be there in that event and we
can discuss more in person abt webmaker :-) what do you say ?

Hi Arun,

Great stuff. Would love to get these thoughts on a webmaker call soon.

Love this idea: One suggestion is to network with Design schools
in developing countries like India to create materials for those countries.

Could you help make some connections? Also with our current thinking and prototypes with Hackable Activity Kits people can make their own projects and event kits that hold more cultural relevancy.

Chris

We did so. That did not really workout. We have to constrain the problem and
give resources to work with.

We showed few samples which included a) Visual Bio of APJ Abdul Kalam
b) a funny story created around two persons in in the team c) Volkswagen advt
d) Celebrity thoughts based on Indian cricketers e) Campaign video on
environmental protection

Only one team came with a story like theme.
