Does the day seem a little sunnier? Is air a little fresher? Do you feel
giddy with promise of innovation and great new ideas?

Then maybe that's because yesterday marked the kickoff of the Knight News
Challenge --- the $2.75 million fund that will support innovative ideas
that strengthen the Internet and keep it open, trustworthy, and safe for
free expression and innovation.

Mozilla is joining the Ford Foundation and Knight Foundation in supporting
the challenge, and Mark has a great blog post up on exactly why Mozillians
are key people in this challenge. Read the more information below, but
you're highly encouraged to both participate (and encourage your networks
to participate) and spread the word. Gooooo Interenet!

The Basics:

Mozilla is teaming up with the Knight Foundation and Ford Foundation for
the Knight News Challenge -- a $2.75 million fund to support innovative
ideas that strengthen the Internet for free expression and innovation.

Applicants can enter by completing a brief entry on newschallenge.org by
March 18 that answers the question: How can we strengthen the Internet for
free expression and innovation? The challenge aims to attract a broad range
of innovative ideas from journalism, policy, research and education.

The application period for this round on strengthening the Internet will
close at 5 p.m. ET March 18, 2014. Experts will help Knight and a set of
advisers review the entries. Winners will be announced in June 2014 at the
MIT-Knight Civic Media Conference.

Context:

Since 2007 Knight Foundation has reviewed more than 15,000 News Challenge
applications and provided more than $37 million in funding to 111 projects.
This is the first News Challenge of 2014. The theme of the last round was
health, and the seven winners were announced in January.
