Hi Mozilla,

Some of Mozilla’s Python community are planning a Python 3 Migration sprint
in Whistler. You may have heard that Python 2 will be at its end of life
in January 2020. In Whistler we are going to meet and work on porting
Mozilla’s Python 2 code to Python 3.

The porting project itself is a big one: in just the Firefox source tree we
have ~240,000 lines of Python, much of which is Python 2. Mozilla also has
hundreds of GitHub repos using Python for everything from tools to
webservices. This is a big cross-team effort, so if you plan to port your
team’s Python 2 to 3 in the future, or if you just want to lend a hand, we
would love to have you at the sprint.

Details for the Whistler event are in sched:

If you want to help port the Firefox source tree check
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Python_3_Migration#Getting_Involved for
pre-sprint prep instructions. We’ll do more coordination in the sprint
itself to make sure people don’t accidentally port the same module twice. :)

Contact @mars on Slack or ask in the #python channel if you have any
questions.

Hope to see you there,

-mars
