I start up TB and begin reading my messages for the day, then it stops, says "not responding". It had been doing this and I would wait for a minute or so and it would come back and I could continue working. After the latest update it goes into this mode almost immediately and doesn't come back, even after I shut it down and wait a while, it still does not come back. It has been "not responding" now for over 15 minutes.
I am using the latest updated version on Windows 10 also latest version.

My first hypothesis would be that Tbird is doing some housecleaning,
which takes a long time because your Inbox is very large.

Cure: Compact Folders:

Highlight the account name address in the left hand pane.
Right click on File in the menubar
Select Compact Folders
Wait

Reason for Compacting: When you Move or Delete a message from the Inbox,
it is not actually removed. Instead, the messages is marked
Moved/Deleted, the index file is updated, and the Moved or Deleted
message no ;longer appears in the headers list. Compacting rewrites
Inbox by actually removing the Moved/Deleted messages. This can take a
very long time if it's never been done.

Second hypothesis: corrupted Inbox.msf file. That's the index to Inbox.

Cure: Repair the index.

Right click on the accountname/address
Select Properties
Select Repair Folder
Wait
Restart Tbird.

Third hypothesis: A more obscure glitch, you may find this useful:

Search on "Thunderbird Not Responding" for more answers.

Good luck,

It's called "opinion" because it's not knowledge.

Do you see this in any other programs? I have seen this in both Firefox
and Thunderbird (possibly ruling out Thunderbird's compacting or
indexing as the sole cause, unless it's soaking up all the CPU cycles!)
but in my case it also happens in Windows Explorer and Outlook. I think
this laptop's dying, but since most of the time I am in TB or Fx, that's
where I tend to experience the freeze up.

Never see any of this freezing up at home in Linux.

Also this is happening in FF. No other programs have been doing this at this time. Just FF and TBird.

Are both fully updated? What version of Windows?

This is a persistent issue back to TB4x. Join the crowd.

I can't recall the last time it happened here, a couple years ago or
more. FWIW, I've set TB to ask if it should Compact Now. I always click
yes. I also clean out the Inbox at least once a week. Maybe that's why I
have no problems.

Many problems are not resolved by un-/re- installing Tb because of
'badness' in the profile -- a reinstall 'simply' reuses the old profile
which isn't working.

One strategy to getting Tb running/responding again is to create a new
profile.

This is one article explaining how to create a new profile in Windows
using the profile manager. The article also addresses the creation of a
new profile to solve problems.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager#Accessing_the_Profile_Manager

Getting Tb responsive again with a new profile is only one step toward
the overall goal of recovering what is in the old 'broken' profile.
