Like which folders? If they are folders you created, then simply move
them to trash (highlight folder hit <delete> will work as well)
If they are folders created by the program (Drafts, Sent, etc) then
don't bother as they will be recreated when you restart, so just leave
them be.

Another Sent, and in it, a third Sent.

Doesn't work.

I do not know where they came from. Thanks.

Just exactly what do you mean by 'doesn't work' above?
highlight the folder you want deleted and press the delete icon in the
toolbar

Or two, pick them up and place them in the deleted folder

remove the folders, then close TB and remove the files from
within the profile.

I tried that, nothing happens,as in "doesn't work"

They do not "pick up",attempting to do so presents the NO symbol: the
circle with a slash through ut.

I agree with Ms. Laurie's description. I created some Local Folders,
used them, then tried and tried and ... and tried to make them go away.
I could not get TBird to accomplish that task. Eventually, I closed
Tbird and removed the folders with OS file mangler tools. They were
gone and stayed gone after TBird restart.

TBird would not accomplish the folder delete. Yes, I removed all folder
contents before I tried to delete them.

Please intersperse or bottom post thank you.
That is, quote previous messages (or parts thereof) then write your
response, such as I have done, thank you for your consideration in this
regard.

You and Laurie are talking similar situations but from what has been
written, not quite the same. You created your folders, and I believe she
was speaking of the default folders.

In any case, highlight the folder and then select
File-->Delete Folder
the folder should then appear in the Deleted Folder, and will disappear
when you empty the trash

As I stated to Laurie, doing this with the default standard folders
(Drafts, Sent, Deleted, etc) will not work, they will be recreated on
restart. Learn to live with em... if you dont want to use them, fine
just ignore them.

But the ones you created can be deleted using the above method

Actually, he is not referring to a REAL default Sent folder, but two
nested spurious "Sent" folders that came out of nowhere.

> In any case, highlight the folder and then select

There is no -->Delete Folder option in the File menu, it is in the Edit
menu, but that does not work, presumably because they are named "Sent".
And NO, I can not rename the spurious "Sent" folder to another
non-protected name in oder to delete them.

These "Sent" folders are NOT the "default standard folders", BUT two
spurious "Sent" folders coming out of the blue. Poltergeists, perhaps?

> But the ones you created can be deleted using the above method

I did NOT create them, they just arrived with no intent or effort on my
part.

I would have replied IF specific info as how to accomplish this were
given; e.g. WHERE is this "profile" "located"? My wife IS a psychic,
but she reads
people, not computers<g>. I am a clueless newbie at TB.

instead of ignoring the message, all you had to do was ASK.

To find your profile, you can read this:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/edit#profile

but if you're using windows, then you must read this first:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx

If it is OBVIOUS that people are newbies, then giving cryptic geek
responses are (intentionally?) meaningless. Simple explanations should
be included.

Got it, but there is no "/mail/ folder ", and yes hidden files are shown.

Hi Laurie,

Since your issue is in "Local Folders", that is the folder you need to
look in within your profile, not the "Mail" folder. Folders that you
see in TB within "Local Folders" are files *without* any extension, i.e.
the Sent folder will be named Sent, Trash will be named Trash, etc. The
files with an MSF extension are called summary files, and one will be
created with each folder if it is being used. So with TB closed, remove
the files (named file and the MSF file) in "Local Folders" that you are
seeing within TB and want removed. There may also be a folder with the
same name with an SBD extension, remove that also. Then start TB.

Right, there is no /mail/ folder in Firefox but there is in Thunderbird.
Me tinks the directions posted were wrong (for FF).

I also had the two extra can't be deleted sent folders when I upgraded from
TB 1.5 to TB 2.0. I had to edit some of the files in the profile and delete
some others in order to get rid of these undeleteable extra sent folders.
Not an operation for a newbie, even if I could remember exactly what I did.
I did in fact post on this once to someone here back when things were
fresher in my mind on what I did.

Probably easier for a newbie to export all messages and address book to
outlook express. Fire up outlook express and make sure all the messages and
address book are showing up (import them into outlook express if necessary
from the files TB exported to). Then completely uninstall TB. Then
completely delete all TB profile directories and files (this step is very
important or the uninstall and reinstall to get rid of these extra sent
folders will likely fail). Then reinstall TB 2.0. If this computer is
hooked up to a domain server then the TB profile folders and files might be
physically located on a network server somewhere.

Its possible to get rid of these extra sent folders without doing the above,
but that requires editing some of the files in the TB profile and figuring
the names of the appropriate files to be deleted and then deleting them. A
newbie would never be able to do it.

I did post a corrections followup. Again, people are
jumping to conclusions without reading the whole thread.

I tried what you suggest. The delete targeted folder did not move.
Others moved and vanished with EmptyTrash. This folder did not and does
not. Yes, I have full access permissions on the folder, its parent,
and its contents. Next suggestion?

I see this "can't delete" behavior for these stray SENT folders as well
as a few that I created myself. Somewhere there are sticky bits (sic)
that are preventing a delete.

I found my profile and deleted its contents and the folder and all of that.

My work and life continued on.

I made more folders, stored more messages, la la la la.
Now I cannot delete them using the TBird interface.
... Oh, and the errant SENT folders are back.

There is a state of mind called Conscious Competence. This means that
one not only knows what they know, but
they know how they know it. In contrast, there is Unconscious
Competence where one knows something so well, that they need not
think to act correctly. It is nearly impossible to teach something
without Conscious Competence. Power Users, grey-beards, and similar
folks simply know the software too well.

"Newbie" is not another word for "idiot", and I offer no indictment or
criticism of anyone. They are simply Unconsciously Incompetent -- They
don't know what they don't know. It isn't personal.

Seems this is the current status of the "human" species. How long has
"modern man" been on this planet - a few 10's of thousands of years?
And we STILL do not know hoe to live with each other, in spite of or
because of, lots of "spiritual" prophets, who supposedly came to this
planet to help the human ape out. Worse, we do not know how to eat, as
evidenced by the pandemic "diseases".
How, indeed could one come to "know" that which one does not "know"?

manual delete worked fine but then "something happened ... la la la"
and the folders returned. Elsewhere in that same posting, I stepped

I regret that you took offense to my previous post. I was trying to
point out how hard it might be to explain something simple for someone
who really knows the ins-and-outs and gritty details of that same thing.

You clearly know very VERY much about Tbird. You also post to many in
useful and helpful ways. However, there are some of us who don't know
enough to ask cogent questions. We want to learn.

With regrets and apology,
