Are there any config settings or extensions that can keep threads expanded?
There is an open bug for it. Not much activity with it though.
Hmmm...threads are expanded by default with my version 5.
Make sure that VIEW->THREADS->UNREAD is selected as well as
VIEW->THREADS->EXPAND ALL THREADS.
New posts are shown threads expanded.
My preferred setting is View | Threads | All.
What's strange is that some newsgroups in other accounts _were_ showing
up as expanded by default, but in the last couple of days that stopped
happening.
If you remember to press the asterisk key (Shift-8) when you open a
newsgroup, that opens all the threads. Still, it's yet another
unresolved bug that's joined the pile.

Do you experience the problem with all/any newsgroup? The View
settings appear remembered per-group, so you'll have to choose View
-> Threads -> Expand All Threads [*] for all of the groups once (the
first time) you visit them individually.

As I wrote, if you select VIEW->THREADS->UNREAD, your new posts will be
threaded and expanded when you open the group.
No, I've tried that. It doesn't work for me.

Perhaps so, but won't that limit the viewable posts or threads to only
the unread ones?

Yes. But I thought that was the intent.

In your screenshot, bold and standard SUBJECT headers are shown,
meaning you are viewing old and new messages. If you had REALLY
selected VIEW->THREADS->UNREAD, only new (unread) SUBJECT
headers would be shown (in BOLD.)
Go to VIEW->THREADS, and make sure you have selected UNREAD
(second choice.)
Are there any config settings or extensions that might help here?
>I'm seeing this for email as well. Expanding all threads will expand the current threads, but any emails in new threads get buried in collapsed threads and are easy to miss. A partial workaround for email is the Conversations add-on, which helps to see additional emails for collapsed threads, but it only works for the currently focused thread.

I haven't found any yet. I don't use Thunderbird for newsgroups only
for e-mail and this is one of the biggest complaints I have. I
usually have my e-mail open when I am at home, and hate when new
messages come in they are buried in a thread instead of auto expanding
when they arrive.

Then you are SOL, I'm afraid. Good thing, too. Many of the NG I visit
have more than a thousand posts on the server. Expanding all of an old
thread just because a reply is added months later is nonsensical. If
you *really* need to expand an old thread you are free to do so. But
as a default setting? Please no.
as in, I want to be able to see EVERYTHING, not just unread posts or
threads.
Either you or I have a failure to communicate going on here.

I was going by an earlier post, when it was said:
"How can I make the normal usenet view show expanded
threads by default? I know about View | Threads |
Expand All Threads (also done by pressing the asterisk
key) and that expands the current threads, but it
*doesn't expand any new posts the next time I view the
group until I do it again."*
I took that as meaning that the writer wanted just new
posts displayed/expanded. I guess not.
It'd be nice to simply be able to view all threads and have them always expanded at the same time. That way you can navigate to any message easily while still viewing them in the thread structure.

If I am looking for an old/read message, I prefer having the threads
collapsed, and only expanding the thread in which my desired message
resides. It makes things easier, IMO.
This is something foreign to me as I don't retain but a few messages in
newsgroups. Are you talking about email, or newsgroups? You can use
the collapse all threads, and expand all threads in the context menu,
then expand only the thread you are interested in.
I guess you're right if you kept every post in a newsgroup, but I don't
have Thunderbird set up that way. First off I have it set to not
download any message that is over 30 days old. Then in the retention
policy, it's set to remove message bodies after 30 days, and remove
message headers after 90 days. Here's a screenshot of my settings:
http://my.jetscreenshot.com/1443/20110802-o9zg-89kb
So for example this news group only shows 2305 messages as of this
writing. As a result with the way I have TBird set up there would not
be that many old messages showing in a old message thread.

Good for you, we're all happy that this is *your* preference. However,
other people, like me, have OTHER preferences. Can you grasp this fact???
You're trying to talk people out of their preferences. I'm sure you
wouldn't like having this done to you, so try to understand that others
don't like it when you do it to them.
And now, since you've drifted this thread so far away from my original
message, I will quote it here just to remind anybody who is following
this thread what it's supposed to be about:

HOW CAN I MAKE THE NORMAL USENET VIEW SHOW EXPANDED THREADS BY DEFAULT?

This has already been answered. You CAN'T make TB5 expand *ALL* (old &
new) threads until you select EXPAND ALL after you open the newsgroup.
You can make it show & expand *NEW* messages in threads by
selecting VIEW->THREADS->UNREAD. You can make it show all (old & new)
threads COLLAPSED by selecting VIEW->THREADS->ALL. Sometimes, this
choice is maintained after TB is closed and opened. Usually not.
