I can't get tools>options>display>'when displaying message...' to
retain the color settings. I just upgraded to TB ver.7 and all the
colors went whacky. Uninstalled and reinstalled earlier version
(3.1.15). Disabled all add-ons. Using default theme. Restored previous
profile. Nothing is resolving this glitch. If I set the background
color it stays that way as long as TB is opened. When I close and
re-open, the color has gone back to where it WAS. Is there some hidden
setting I'm missing. Thanks.

- do you have any add-ons/extensions? You didn't say.
- do you use a user.js or userChrome.css? You didn't say.
- are we talking about 'everything' - message pane, opened message in
a tab or window, editing reply message, all, less?

Here are some articles about tweaking/ changing the default/ in other
ways than display config.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Pane_background_colors You can change the
background colors in Thunderbird's (or Mozilla Suite's) preview pane,
folders pane, and message list pane, etc. by modifying your user.js and
userChrome.css files as described below.

Thunderbird by changing it’s chrome <beware the feral apostrophe in the

http://kb.mozillazine.org/White_on_black_-_Thunderbird This page
contains an example of how to use your userContent.css file to display
messages in Thunderbird in white text on a black background.

I took to using the userContent.css file in the chrome subdirectory of
the profile for setting the background of the messages and also of the
view source window. That works fine, and I can use any colour, not just
those in the colour picker.

body {background-color: #FFE4C0;}

Just change the hexadecimal value to change the colour.

Thanks for replies. The tip from EE concerning the userContent.css
addition did the trick! Many thanks.
