I have deleted TB account and tried again.  Still same response to "Get Mail"
One of several 'help web pages:
(from 2011)
http://www.tech-evangelist.com/2011/01/30/gmail-pop3-configuration/
and
https://www.lifewire.com/what-are-the-gmail-smtp-settings-1170854

Below is what I posted in google gmail forum

My first gmail account.
I do have Settings: Status: POP is enabled for all mail
Password works with IMAP.

Thunderbird... (45.7.1)
Configuration could not be verified...
So I went to Manual configuration (Been using TB for many years).

Type in password again

Sending of password for user (me)@gmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Web login required: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754

So I go there and follow instructions.
...
If the tips above didn't help, visit https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and follow the steps on the page.

From here it gets to be a recursive loop, but account IS activated.. And I know the password is correct because IMAP works.

I deleted the TB account, and tried again.

Same result.
I don't know what to look for.   Help!

Not sure of the settings you use but for pop I'm using
Full email address, with the @gmail.com and these settings. And it's
worked for quite a while for me.

(Incoming)Server Settings: pop.googlemail.com
Port: 995
SSL/TLS
normal password

Outgoing Server: smtp.googlemail.com
Port: 465
SSL/TLS
normal password.

Yes, I always use the full email address.

I have run out of things to try,
Even different passwords
If I use SSL/TLs, the message I get

Web login required_:
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754 ; "web login required," so I do that song and dance. Nothing changes.

If I change it to STARTTLS, no error message and it is waiting for server response...
"Connecting to pop.gmail.com... "and times out after a minute, and gives message "
"No messages to download"
Repeats that sequence again, and stops after that.

I have the gmail POP settings I get all, even if already done.
I send test emails. IMAP works.

This "feels like" it is not connecting to the pop.gmail.com server. but did not receive an exception.
If the server is unavailable, I would expect a message.
====================================
Maybe this is important. Again I tried delete account/ New account
Every time I have done this with POP3,
Message, "Configuration could not be verified -- is the username or password wrong?"
That's when I go to "Manual Config"

Now I wonder if the POP3 server does not have me, yet. Is there a delay as to when the POP server configuration gets
updated? I'll try tomorrow.

You need to post a screenshot of the actual error message.  There must be something else that you haven't told us.

Did you make sure that the settings is still shown to enable either pop or imap when you went to your gmail account?  See this picture:

Thank you, yes.
Over and over I did 'sanity check'  because I am certain that it is the pop server being unkind to my intentions.

After many recursive  attempts of dropping the TB account / create new,
IMAP and POP,

I am certain of important facts:

1) it is not a password problem
2) It is not a web login / captcha problem
3) it is a POP server rejection of my username / password credentials.
and my gmail Settings have both IMAP and POP enabled.

The google account name is not new, but it is the first time I have ever used GMail.
It's as if the server doesn't know about me.

Maybe after another overnight processing cycle... it will find out about me.

New test scenario:
New Thunderbird Profile

Firefox, Log into my gmail account

Found...
Settings: 1. Status: Pop is enabled

Status: IMAP is disabled

TB: Add gmail Account
TB defaults used, and are correct for IMAP

TB "Get Messages"l
Succeeded in retrieving 12 messages.   ! (IMAP is disabled?)

Restart TB with profile that has gmail configured POP3
Same old result:

Conclusion?

For POP you'll need to 'allow less secure apps' or alternatively turn on
2-step authentication and create and app password.

Thank you!
That works

I don't have a smartphone, and had not heard the term "less secure apps"

! Huh?
-> Less Secure App?

I never heard that term before. I don't have a smartphone.

Respondent in this topic pointed me to the GMAIL setting...
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6009563?hl=en

and I was able to search / locate the YAHOO setting...
