I upgraded from TB 2 to 3 and now I cannot access the attachment in
some of my old emails in the inbox.
Here is the Source of the Email. The first part boundary_55_0bf5b61e-
ac87-4c61-9c2f-0944da4e78f0
contains the message. This is displayed without problem. But
Thunderbird show no available attachment.
The File RECHNUNG-V9-871-02-11032011.PDF.p7m is not accessable.
If I save the email (size 56KB) as an .eml file and open this file in
Outlook Express I can see and
access the attachment.

I forgot to mention that I am using TB 3.1.9 on Windows XP.
If I forward the message, I can see the attachment in design view of
the new message.
I can save the attachemnt from there.
I edited the .eml file an changed the extension of the attachment
from
RECHNUNG-V9-871-02-11032011.PDF.p7m
to
RECHNUNG-V9-871-02-11032011.PDF
If I open this .eml file in TB 3.1.9 on Windows i can see the
attachement.
If I change it to
RECHNUNG-V9-871-02-11032011.p7m
the attachment is missing. So the extension .p7m seems to be the
problem.

This indicates that the source program adds this extension, though why
it should do so is a mystery.
What PDF creation/mailing program does your correspondent use?

What kinds of addons/extensions were/are you using in Tb2 that might not
be working properly in Tb3?

.p7m is a pkcs #7 encryption extension.
That is not 'included' in the default Tbird.

I seem to remember Zone Alarm used to rename ZIP files to have a Z9m
(or similar) extension if the email scanning was activated.

Long discussion in the bug place; I think the 2004 part is less
important to read than the 2010 part.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=243833 Bug 243833 - Unable
to see/detach .p7m attachments of Content-Type: application/pkcs7-mime
There is support in the bug report for the smart p7m handler.
It seems to me that most of the interest is in some Italian documents
where it is popular.
