Hello world,

I have added an additional SMTP-only account to Thunderbird (with no
according IMAP or POP3 account). The new account shows up under
"Tools/Account Settings.../Outgoing Server (SMTP)", but when I compose a
new email, it is NOT listed in the "From:" popup menu.
(Here only those SMTP accounts show up that have been associated with an
according IMAP/POP3/NNTP account).

So how can I actually send an email from the SMTP-only account?

SMTP is a sending protocol, not a stand-alone account.

I have an account which is only used for smtp sending.

I created a pop3 account (since the pop is never used, it doesn't even
matter if it doesn't really exist as a server) and that account 'shows
up' in the Settings left panel as a genuine operational account like the
pops, imaps, nntps, and rss/es. And it has a 'corresponding' smtp server.

Although you can add an smtp account in the outgoing server section and
configure to use it for some 'other' unrelated pop or imap account, it
is not going to show up in the left pane of the accounts settings.

The pop side of the equation/account on mine is not configured to 'do
anything' such as check for mail or download any headers or messages.

The drop-down menu beside 'From' in the write window lists identities
you have set up, not SMTP servers or accounts.

If you want one entry in the drop-down menu to be the same name,
address, etc., but different SMTP server, here's how to do it:

1. Go to Tools-->Account_Settings.
2. Select the account you will be sending from, and at the bottom-right,
click [Manage Identities].
3. Click [Add].
4. Fill in the identity info the same as you already have set up for
that account, but at the bottom of the first tab, select a different
SMTP server.

After you have saved that identity, an additional item should be
available in the 'From' menu when composing a message.
For more info, see
<http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/using-identities>.

If this is just a matter of changing your SMTP server depending on where
you are (i.e. how you're connected to the internet), you can set your
accounts to use the default SMTP server, then when you change
connections, just go to Tools-->Account_Settings-->Outgoing_Server, and
set another SMTP server as the default.

Additionally, there are some good extensions you might be interested in,
that let you switch SMTP servers on the fly.

Ok, it seems I misunderstood the underlying concept.
It works now, so thank you for the answers!
