Hello.

I've noticed thunderbird uses folders for gmail labels. However the
labeled messages are not also shown in inbox.

In web gmail you can see only certain labeled messages if you filter,
but the messages are also shown in your inbox first.
I would like Thunderbird to behave like this. Is it possible?

Example: I created a test folder in thunderbird. As soon as I dragged a
message from the inbox to it, it dissaperaed from the inbox. I didn't
want that to happen. I just wanted Thunderbird to apply that label to it
without actually removing it from the inbox. The same thing happens if I
create the label in web gmail: It dissapears from the inbox in Thunderbird.

If there was a way to prevent to prevent this from happening so that I
could see the message in my inbox regardless of how many labels I've
applied, it would be great.

thanks

Right-click on message header in message list (Inbox), select Tag, and
do what's needed.

Dragging a message header is equivalnet to Move. If you want to see the
message header in the Inbox, use Copy: right-click on header, select
Copy To, you'll get a list of possible locations, click on the one you want.

BTW, when you create a folder, make sure it's under the account name and
not under the Inbox.

The Thunderbirds tags are not what I use. It's the gmail labels. They
translate as folders in thunderbird, but in gmail, messages with the
labels applied don't get moved from the inbox. In Thunderbird they do
automatically, and that's the problem.

Autumn, this is working as designed in Thunderbird. Take a look at this article.

I've read that, and I understand this is the way it works by default.
I'm just asking if there's a way to change it so that I can see
everything in my inbox regardless of the labels. I'm not saying I want
to get rid of the labels folders. I just want the labeled messages to be
included in my inbox as well, or at least I want to know if it's
possible to do this in TB

I don't understane.

1. If you label an inbox entry in the gmail inbox it appears both in
the inbox and in the label folder in Thunderbird.

2. If you drag an entry from the inbox to a folder in Thunderbird you
are moving it! Of course it's no longer in the inbox.

3. If you copy it it stays in the inbox.

What exactly is your issue?

1 doesn't happen for me. When I label an inbox entry in gmail it appears
ONLY in the label folder in Thunderbird. That's my issue

that's odd. I just tested it with one of my gmail accounts. I labelled
an email in gmail. And it now show up both in my inbox and in the
corresponding folder in thunderbird.

OK, I can confirm what you just said. I was a bit confused and thought
it wouldn't work from web gmail. I apologize for the wrong information.

Now I now what the real problem is:
If we create/apply labels in gmail the messages still appear on TB's
inbox, right?
Now, how would we go about creating/applying those labels (which would
be folders) in TB while keeping the messages in Inbox?

By copying? Is that the only way?

Thanks

It's really copying a reference to the message, not copying the message.
Select the message and hold ctrl down while you drag it to the folder.
If you then look in gmail on the web, you'll see that the message has
been labelled, not duplicated.

All rigt, thanks. I've got another question now. How do you synchronize
Thunderbird tags (not gmail labels) accross different computers? Should
I start another thread?c
